Rumble Doll
Released 1993
Rumble Doll is the beautiful debut album by Patti Scialfa. This album was released in 1993. The record clearly defined Patti Scialfa as an evocative talent stepping out from behind the shadows of her husband, Bruce Springsteen. The influence of artists like Ronnie Spector and other 1960s soul and folk songwriters and singers was clearly present through the album’s wonderful showcase of songs and vocal performances. Rumble Doll was recorded over several months at The Hit Factory in New York City. The production was led by Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, along with Scialfa herself.
The album features a lineup of well known musicians, including Scialfa on vocals, guitar, and keyboards; Mike Campbell on guitar; Bruce Springsteen on guitar; Nils Lofgren on guitar; Jim Keltner and Kenny Aronoff on drums; Jerry Marotta on drums and percussion; Benmont Tench on organ and piano. 23rd Street Lullaby
Released 2004
23rd Street Lullaby is Patti Scialfa’s second studio album, released in 2004, following her debut Rumble Doll. This one was eleven years in the making. She was reading children in the 1990s while also supporting Bruce Springsteen’s musical career. She is an exceptional woman. 23rd Street Lullaby was another strong effort filled with wonderfully written songs and musical performances. It’s a poetic street album showcasing Patti’s East Coast upbringing and influences. The sounds of New York City and the Jersey Shore are all over this album. At times she reminds me of Laura Nyro, who grew up in my Bronx neighborhood. The musicians on 23rd Street Lullaby include Bruce Springsteen on guitar and vocals, Nils Lofgren on guitar, Steve Jordan on drums, Willie Weeks on bass, and Clifford Carter on keyboards.
