The Offspring’s roots stretch back to Garden Grove, California, in 1984, when vocalist Bryan “Dexter” Holland and bassist Greg Kriesel began playing together while still classmates. The group was initially known as Manic Subsidal before adopting The Offspring name. Guitarist Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman and drummer James Lilja helped shape the early lineup, while Ron Welty replaced Lilja in 1987 and became the drummer during the band’s rise in the 1990s.
The band released its self-titled debut album in 1989 through Nemesis Records. Although the record did not achieve immediate commercial success, it established the fast, confrontational approach that would define the group. Ignition followed on Epitaph Records in 1992 and expanded The Offspring’s audience within the Southern California punk scene.
The release of Smash in 1994 transformed the band’s career. Driven by “Come Out and Play,” “Self Esteem,” and “Gotta Get Away,” the album became the best-selling album released by an independent label. Its combination of punk velocity, hard-rock weight, humor, and social unease helped push the band into the center of the decade’s alternative-rock explosion.
Ixnay on the Hombre arrived in 1997 as the band’s first studio album distributed by Columbia Records. Songs including “Gone Away,” “All I Want,” and “The Meaning of Life” retained the group’s punk foundation while introducing a broader and more polished production. Americana followed in 1998 and produced another major run of singles through “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy),” “Why Don’t You Get a Job?,” and “The Kids Aren’t Alright.”
The Offspring continued through the 2000s with Conspiracy of One, Splinter, and Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace. The period produced songs including “Want You Bad,” “Hit That,” “Hammerhead,” and “You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid.” Days Go By followed in 2012, balancing the title track and “The Future Is Now” with more playful material such as “Cruising California (Bumpin’ in My Trunk).”
Let the Bad Times Roll arrived in 2021 after the band’s longest interval between studio albums. It included “This Is Not Utopia,” “Behind Your Walls,” “The Opioid Diaries,” and a piano-led re-recording of “Gone Away.” The band returned in 2024 with its eleventh studio album, Supercharged, a ten-song set featuring “Make It All Right,” “Light It Up,” “Come to Brazil,” and “OK, But This Is the Last Time.”
The lineup continued changing after Greg Kriesel’s departure, with Todd Morse assuming bass duties and additional musicians joining the touring group. Dexter Holland and Noodles remained the band’s central creative partnership. In 2026, The Offspring appeared with Electric Callboy on “Let the Good Times Roll,” extending the catalog through another cross-generational collaboration.
Outside the band, Holland completed a doctorate in molecular biology and created the Gringo Bandito hot sauce company. Noodles has supported music education and other charitable efforts. Those pursuits have existed alongside a recording history that ranges from early demos and punk compilations to blockbuster albums, soundtrack covers, acoustic versions, Christmas singles, and modern collaborations.
