There was a time before MTV emerged in the early 1980s when the only music seen on television came from late-night talk show performances or live performances on programs like The Midnight Special, Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, and occasional rock concerts or other late-night music shows. However, perhaps the most exciting music performances on television were the live appearances by the hottest bands of the time on Saturday Night Live. NBC celebrated Saturday Night Live‘s five-decade legacy with the unique tribute Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music.
The three-hour documentary premiered on January 27, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and streamed the next day on Peacock. Directed by Grammy and Academy Award winner Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Oz Rodriguez, the special explored the relationship between music and comedy that has defined SNL since its debut in 1975. Produced by Two One Five Entertainment, RadicalMedia, and Broadway Video, the documentary offered a behind-the-scenes look at how many of the show’s iconic musical performances came to life.
Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music featured interviews with more than 50 key figures, including music legends such as Paul Simon, Billie Eilish, Mick Jagger, and Jack White, alongside show alumni including Eddie Murphy, Maya Rudolph, and Kenan Thompson. The interviews explored memorable performances and the creative process that helped turn SNL into a cultural institution. Questlove described exploring the archives as a journey through time and expressed his excitement about bringing the stories and performances to audiences.
The documentary was part of a larger celebration of Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary. Peacock launched SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, a four-part documentary series, on January 16, 2025, offering an inside look at the show’s production process and cultural impact. The anniversary festivities culminated on February 16 with SNL50: The Anniversary Special, a live primetime event that brought together generations of performers for a celebration of the show’s history.
Executive producers Lorne Michaels, Questlove, and a team of filmmakers and producers shaped Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music as a retrospective on the show’s musical legacy. Combining archival footage, interviews, and performances that helped define generations, the documentary offered a sweeping look at the intersection of music and comedy throughout Saturday Night Live‘s first 50 years.
