The American country group known as Little Big Town was originally founded in 1998 by Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet, and Jimi Westbrook. Each of these founding members is still with the band today where each of them takes turns in a four-part lead vocal harmony that serves as the core of their music style. After an unproductive recording deal with Mercury Nashville Records, Little Big Town moved onto Monument Records, which saw them release their self-titled debut album in 2002. Come 2005, Little Big Town signed with Clint Black’s independently owned Equity Music Group. It would be through his record label the quartet would realize their first real breakthrough as their second studio album “The Road to Here” reached RIAA’s Platinum Certification since its 2005 release. Their third studio album (A Place to Land) was first released by Equity but then re-released by Capitol Nashville when Equity closed in 2008.
Little Big Town’s discography resume features nine studio albums released so far, as well as a compilation album. In total, there are also twenty music videos and twenty seven singles. In addition to their success as recording artists, Little Big Town has received several nominations and wins from various music awards. From the Academy of Country Music Awards (ACMA), they won Top New Duo/Group of the Year in 2007, Vocal Group of the Year in 2013, 2014, and 2017. With the American Music Awards (AMA), Little Big Town was recognized as Favorite Country Duo or Group in 2017. And, with the Country Music Association (CMA), the group earned Vocal Group of the Year each consecutive year from 2012 until 2017. In 2018, Little Big Town also received CMA’s International Artist Achievement Award. From Country Music Television (CMT), the Grammy Awards, and the People’s Choice Awards, the band found themselves taking home additional trophies to add to their already impressive showcase.
Without further adieu, let’s have a peek into the top 10 songs from Little Big Town;
# 10 – Happy People
Digitally released as a promotional single on February 3, 2013, is “Happy People”, which focuses on encouraging kindness and self-actualization. It was the second single released from their album “The Breaker” and is well on its way to achieving RIAA Gold Certification as it has so far sold over 40,000 copies.
# 9 – When Someone Stops Loving You
Their 2017 album “The Breaker” features “When Someone Stops Loving You” which has since earned RIAA’s Gold Certification with so far nearly 70,000 copies sold. The performance of a heartbroken man who just lost his woman and has to somehow continue on as much as it seems like his heart doesn’t want to.
# 8 – Your Side of the Bed
Coming from the 2012 album “Tornado” is the ballad “Your Side of the Bed”, which debuted in 2013 at the American Country Music Awards. Performed as a duet by Karen Fairchild and Jimi Westbrook, the song hits the heart with the brutal honest feeling of lying right next to someone in your own bed that still feels like they’re miles apart. This single earned RIAA’s Gold Certification with over 200,000 copies sold so far.
# 7 – Little White Church
The fourth studio album “The Reason Why” was released on August 24, 2010, with the single “Little White Church” serving as the leading single as it was released a month prior. The song revolves around a disgruntled girlfriend who makes it clear to her man that unless he takes her to the little white church to wed her, their romance is over. The single charted well, reaching as high as #6 with the US Billboard Hot Country Singles and the US Billboard Country Airplay, as well as achieving RIAA’s Platinum Certification.
# 6 – Day Drinking
Released in 2014 with the album “Pain Killer” is the hit single “Day Drinking”, which is a song about not wishing to wait for some special time or occasion just to have some drinks. This fun-themed single debuted at #22 with the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and at #32 with the US Billboard Country Airplay chart. However, in Canada, Day Drinking peaked as high as #1. Since the song’s release, nearly 700,000 copies were sold, which has earned itself an RIAA Platinum Certification so far.
# 5 -Boondocks
Little Big Town didn’t receive their first breakout hit until “Boondocks”, which comes from the October 4, 2005 release of their self-titled album. It would be their very first hit to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching #46. Since its release, Boondocks was certified Double Platinum from RIAA. An interesting note about Boondocks is that it was previously titled “Waiting For the Sun to Go Down” and it was played out differently. Feeling the song was missing that special something, they set it aside a few days and then went back to it, opting to make it more Southern instead.
# 4 – Tornado
This foot-stomping classic, saw Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild labeled as the “go-to girl for attitude” by Taste of Country’s Billy Dukes. Released with the album of the same name in October 2012, “Tornado” not only earned itself mostly positive reviews, but Gold Certification with RIAA and Music Canada with over 700,000 of its copies sold.
# 3 – Better Man
“Better Man” served to be one of three number one hits for Little Big Town after its release in 2016. On the US Billboard Top Country Songs, US Country Airplay, and Billboard Canada’s Country charts, the single peaked at number one on each of their charts. It is also, so far, the third most sold single for the band with over 800,000 copies sold between Canada and the US alone. Better Man earned double Platinum with RIAA, as well as Gold with Music Canada. Originally written by singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, she originally meant for Better Man to be included in one of her albums, but sent it to Little Big Town for them to record instead, which they do so for their 2017 album The Breaker.
# 2 – Girl Crush
Released on December 15, 2014, from the album “Pain Killer”, is the hit single “Girl Crush” that would become the second of two songs released by Little Big Town that would rank number one with the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Girl Crush won five music awards, including a 2016 Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Despite the song’s title, the songwriters point out the girl obsessing over the other girl isn’t due to her attraction to her. The song focuses more on the jealousy of one girl towards the other who seems to have more going for her than she does. With over 2.5 million copies sold, Girl Crush has since earned RIAA’s Platinum Certification five times over.
# 1 – Pontoon
“Pontoon” became Little Big Band’s first number one hit to reach the top of the Billboard charts. So far in total sales as a single, Little Big Town’s performance of hit single has seen over 2.6 million sold in the US, thus earning it RIAA’s certification of Platinum four times over. It also received Music Canada’s Platinum with over 80,000 of the single’s copies sold. This track comes from their fifth studio album “Tornado” which was released on September 11, 2012. With the Country Music Awards, Pontoon won Single of the Year in 2012, as well as 2013’s Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Not bad for a song that was written about a party experience on a pontoon boat.
