This Complete List Of Black Sabbath Albums And Songs presents the full discography of Black Sabbath studio albums.
Birmingham gave Black Sabbath its identity, its sound, and its original lineup. The band came together in 1968 with Tony Iommi on guitar, Bill Ward on drums, Geezer Butler on bass, and Ozzy Osbourne on vocals. Before settling on the name Black Sabbath in 1969, they worked under the names Polka Tulk Blues Band and Earth. Once the new name was in place, the group moved sharply toward darker material, building songs around occult imagery, horror-influenced lyrics, and heavily down-tuned guitar work. That change did not just distinguish them from their peers; it defined the musical language that would drive their career for decades.
Their rise happened fast. The self-titled Black Sabbath and Paranoid, both released in 1970, put the band in front of a large audience almost immediately, and Master of Reality followed in 1971. Those first records became the foundation of their reputation, while later albums such as Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, Technical Ecstasy, and Never Say Die! showed a band willing to stretch beyond its original blueprint. Across its history, Black Sabbath released 19 studio albums, from Black Sabbath through 13. The group’s best-known songs include “Paranoid,” “Iron Man,” and “War Pigs.” “Paranoid” gave the band its only top 10 UK single when it reached number 4 on the UK singles chart, and the album Paranoid reached number 1 on the UK Albums Chart. “Iron Man” became one of the defining songs in the catalog and remained their highest charting US single until 1998’s “Psycho Man.”
Success did not come without change. Osbourne was fired in 1979 and replaced by Ronnie James Dio, who fronted the band on Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, and the live album Live Evil. After Dio and drummer Vinny Appice left, the group recorded Born Again with Ian Gillan on vocals and Bill Ward back on drums. From there, Black Sabbath went through years of shifting personnel, with Tony Iommi remaining the central constant as the band moved through eras featuring Glenn Hughes, Tony Martin, and several rhythm-section changes. Even with all that instability, the name Black Sabbath continued to produce albums, tours, and a recognizable artistic identity. The original lineup reunited in the late 1990s, released the live album Reunion, and, much later, returned for 13, which brought Osbourne, Iommi, and Butler back together.
The commercial numbers tell a huge part of the story. By 2013, Black Sabbath had sold over 70 million records, including 15 million certified by the RIAA in the United States. Their debut album eventually reached platinum status in both the US and the UK. Paranoid sold 4 million copies in the US, and Master of Reality reached the top 10 in both the US and the UK, earning gold certification in less than two months before later going platinum and then double platinum. Those numbers reflect a band that built a massive audience without depending on conventional radio support. The records moved because the music connected, and because the band created a sound that listeners could not mistake for anyone else.
The awards and honors match that long commercial reach. Black Sabbath was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. The band won 2 Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance and also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. They were ranked number 85 on the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time,” and were named the “Greatest Metal Band of All Time” by MTV while placing second on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock” list. Their appeal inside the business has always come back to that original musical force, the thick guitar sound, the ominous atmosphere, and the way those early records gave heavy metal a durable vocabulary. Later generations did not just admire Black Sabbath; they built on what the band created.
Outside the studio and the concert stage, the group’s public activity included major benefit work and large-scale charity efforts. The original lineup reunited for Live Aid on July 13, 1985, at the Philadelphia show. In 2025, the original four members came back together for one final charity concert at Villa Park in Birmingham, titled “Back to the Beginning.” Proceeds from that show supported Cure Parkinsons, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorns Children’s Hospice. That final event brought the story back to the city where the band started, underscoring how closely Black Sabbath’s legacy remained tied to Birmingham from beginning to end.
BLACK SABBATH STUDIO ALBUMS
Black Sabbath
Released 1970
The band’s debut album blew everyone’s minds with a cover that scared the rock and roll out of you. Oh boy? That was all forgotten the second you flipped that LP on your turntable. No one had ever sounded like this. The album’s title track will give you the Willys as it’s based on a very scary experience that Geezer Butler had one morning. Standout tracks on the album include the title track, “N.I.B.” and “Evil Woman.” The album featured the band’s original lineup of Tony Iommi on guitar, Geezer Butler on bass, Bill Ward on drums, and Ozzy Osbourne on lead vocals.

The band’s reunion album was a surprise for all Black Sabbath fans. It had been 20 almost 20 years, and nobody was expecting a new Black Sabbath record. This is absolutely the final Black Sabbath album, at least that’s what Geezer Butler told us. The album featured the return of Ozzy Osbourne as the band’s lead vocalist. It also featured original members Tony Iommi on guitar and Geezer Butler on bass. However, it wasn’t a 100% return to the original lineup, as original drummer Bill Ward did not play on the album. Brad Wilkes took over the drumming duties for the band’s final studio recording.
