Our Top 10 Songs About Moms takes a look at ten of the most special Mom songs released by classic rock artists, as well as some from other genres. When it comes to finding the right song to thank mothers, it’s more about the spiritual connection between two souls so tightly woven that even something that may sound silly to others holds special meaning to them. Among the songs chosen for this list, it’s more about the awesome relationships between mothers and children, where each has their own unique sense of style and, in some cases, humor.
Top 10 Songs About Moms
# 10 – Momma – Bob Seger
Bob Seger’s “Momma” told it like it was, growing up as the son of a woman who wasn’t perfect but was at least honest. This song came from the album Beautiful Loser, which was released in 1975 and served as a powerful reminder that no human being is perfect, and that there will be many trials in a relationship between a mother and child, but they do not trump the love shared between them. A mother’s love for her children will have her do whatever she can, to the best of her ability, to make sure they feel it and know it, even if they don’t always agree with her methods. “Momma” is a good, honest song about motherly love and how Bob Seger made it so fantastic.
# 9 – Simple Man – Lynyrd Skynyrd
Every Lynyrd Skynyrd fan loves this beautiful song. This one is about the advice a mother gives to her son. There is no greater advice than is given in this song to a young Ronnie Van Zant. It’s as heartfelt and genuine as it gets. The song “Simple Man” was originally released on the album Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd. The album was released in 1973. Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd was Lynyrd Skynyrd’s debut album. What a way to start.
# 8 – The Wish – Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen has a talent for making homage-style songs transcend from ordinary to extraordinary. “The Wish” was his way of honoring his mother, going as far as wishing he could take her dancing. Fans who know a thing or two about Bruce Springsteen’s life before he became one of the most iconic rock legends will know that his mother wholeheartedly supported him in pursuing his musical dream. Like any mom who puts her own children before herself, this emotional thank-you deserves to be heard for the priceless gem that it is. “The Wish” appears on the Springsteen on Broadway album, released on December 14, 2018.
# 7 – Stacy’s Mom – Fountains of Wayne
Come on, we can have a little fun here. This is one of the most classic songs of the 2000s. You know you love this one. Mom songs don’t always have to be about flowers and sweets. This is a classic rock and roll site! The song Stacy’s Mom was released by the band Fountains of Wayne. The song became a huge hit in 2003. Stacy’s Mom was even nominated for a Grammy Award. The super-hot, I mean, smoking-hot mom in the video was played by model Rachel Hunter.
# 6 – A Real Mother for Ya – Johnny Guitar Watson
What makes an awesome song to pay homage to moms doesn’t always have to be a heartfelt ballad. It doesn’t hurt to put a bit of hippy funk for that special woman in our lives. “A Real Mother for Ya” by Johnny Guitar Watson serves as that awesome song, too good not to play. Released in 1977, “A Real Mother for Ya” became a number five hit on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, as well as a number forty-one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, and a number forty-four hit on the UK Singles Chart. While this song may or may not pay an exact homage to mothers, there is a definite relation that the need to run for cover often means running back home to mom, who has a knack for making things seem a bit better.
#5 – Superwoman – Alicia Keys
Performed by Alicia Keys, the anthemic “Superwoman” best captures the qualities that make the perfect mom. When this single was released in 2008, it became a number twelve hit on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and peaked at number eighty-two on the US Billboard Hot 100. The amount of respect lyrically delivered in this easy-listening R&B number doesn’t hold back the appreciation women deserve as mothers who sacrifice so much of themselves on behalf of their own child just to make sure they become supermen and women themselves.
# 4 – Mama Liked the Roses – Elvis Presley
“Mama Liked the Roses” was a 1970 song performed by Elvis Presley, in which he described his mother’s love for one of the most beloved flowers. Even as Presley performed what has since become a fan favorite, it seemed he was fighting back his own tears as he shared a memory of the one woman who meant more to him than any other. This song was recorded approximately twelve years after she died, which served as a beautiful reminder of how the love of someone so special in our lives never fades away, even as we try to move on with our own lives. Presley’s memory of the roses his mother grew in the garden and kept in the house was beautifully shared by a boy who still loved his mother as the ultimate figure in his life, more important than any other.
#3 – Mama, I’m Coming Home – Ozzy Osbourne
The incredible ballad “Mama, I’m Coming Home” was written and performed by Ozzy Osbourne in full dedication to his wife, Sharon. Word-for-word, you can easily pick up how much he loves her and what he means to her. Many husbands also look upon their wives as a surrogate mom, as it is she who helps them get through all the ups and downs life has to offer. Granted, she’s not really his mom, but in many cases, close enough. On the US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, “Mama, I’m Coming Home” was a number-two hit, and it peaked at number 28 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This internationally favored song also charted in Austria, Germany, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the UK.
# 2 – Ma – Rare Earth
“Ma” is one of those fantastic songs that has an amazing impact, so genius as an homage to mothers, it’s rather difficult to listen to it without at least an urge to offer her a well-deserved salute. The praise of a woman who managed to take on the world and still hold her head up high as she does everything she can to do right by her kids was beautifully illustrated in this phenomenal song. Rare Earth really outdid themselves with “Ma” as it was made quite obvious how much they love the most important woman in their life. “Ma” was a 1973 recording featured as the title track of what remains one of the group’s best-rated albums. Norman Whitfield was an absolute genius as a singer, songwriter, and producer who seemed to give the genres of funk-rock and R&B that special something as if “Ma” herself played a key role in everything he did.
# 1 – Julia – The Beatles
There is no greater song about Moms than the heartfelt song John Lennon wrote for his mom, named Julia. It’s a sad tale because John Lennon lost his mom in a car crash when he was quite young. There is nothing worse than losing one of your parents when you are young. John Lennon’s lyrics are incredibly touching as he expresses both pain and loving thoughtfulness in this breathtaking song he wrote for his mom. The song was released on the album The Beatles, which was commonly referred to as The White Album. Julia was released in 1968.
