Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell was born on December 18, 2001, and grew up in the Highland Park neighborhood with parents Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, both of whom were musicians and working actors. She was homeschooled with her older brother, Finneas O’Connell, and that gave both siblings the time and freedom to focus seriously on creative work. Her mother taught them the basics of songwriting, and Eilish started early, playing ukulele at age 6, joining the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus at age 8, and writing her first real song at age 11. Dance was also a major part of her life until a growth plate injury in 2016 pushed her attention more fully toward recording.
The beginning of her professional career came through her work with Finneas in 2015. The first songs they recorded together were “She’s Broken” and “Fingers Crossed,” but the turning point was “Ocean Eyes,” released on November 18, 2015. Finneas had written, mixed, and produced the song, which was originally intended for his band before it became clear that Eilish’s voice gave it a distinct identity. The track went onto SoundCloud, drew several hundred thousand listens within 2 weeks, and quickly changed the scale of what seemed possible. By early 2016, Apple Music had signed her to Platoon, and later that year, Justin Lubliner signed her to Darkroom and Interscope. The development was fast, but it was not random. Eilish, Finneas, and her team built a distinctive image and sound early, and the debut EP Don’t Smile at Me in 2017 confirmed that momentum by reaching number 14 on the Billboard 200.
Her rise from promising newcomer to major pop force happened with unusual speed. Eilish has released 3 studio albums: When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? in 2019, Happier Than Ever in 2021, and Hit Me Hard and Soft in 2024. The first of those albums debuted at number 1 on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart, and it produced “Bad Guy,” the song that became her first Billboard Hot 100 number 1 and later earned Diamond certification from the RIAA. That single also made her the first artist born in the 21st century to top the Hot 100. Her second album repeated the number 1 result on the Billboard 200 and delivered a strong group of hit singles, including “My Future,” “Therefore I Am,” “Your Power,” and “Happier Than Ever,” all of which reached the top 10 in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, added “Lunch” and “Birds of a Feather,” with “Birds of a Feather” becoming her first number 1 on the Billboard Global 200.
Her list of biggest hit singles stretches well beyond a single era. “Bad Guy” remains the defining early blockbuster, but “No Time to Die” gave her a number 1 hit in the UK and extended her reach into film. “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie became her second UK number 1 and added another major award-winning song to her catalog. “Everything I Wanted,” “Bury a Friend,” “When the Party’s Over,” “Therefore I Am,” “Happier Than Ever,” “Lunch,” and “Birds of a Feather” all helped build a catalog that kept expanding without losing its identity. Part of why she is so respected in the business is visible in those records themselves. She and Finneas built a sound that was intimate, sparse, and unmistakable, and it connected across pop, alternative pop, and electronica without sounding manufactured. That combination of vocal character, songwriting, and artistic control made her more than a streaming phenomenon; it made her a central pop artist of her generation.
The awards tell that story in hard numbers. Eilish has won 2 Academy Awards, 10 Grammy Awards, 9 American Music Awards, 20 Guinness World Records, 8 MTV Video Music Awards, 4 Brit Awards, 3 Billboard Music Awards, and 2 Golden Globe Awards. She became the second artist and the only female artist in Grammy history to win all 4 general field categories in a single ceremony: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. She was also the youngest ever winner of both Album of the Year and Record of the Year. She became the first person born in the 21st century to win both a Grammy Award and an Academy Award, and the youngest ever 2 time Academy Award winner. Her recognition has extended beyond music awards as well, including appearances on Time’s Time 100 Next list in 2019 and the Time 100 in 2021, inclusion among the BBC 100 Women in 2022, Billboard’s Woman of the Year honor in 2019, and Apple Music’s Artist of the Year in both 2019 and 2024.
Outside of music, Eilish has been active in film, publishing, product design, and advocacy, and the details are specific. She starred in the documentary film Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, released in 2021, and later released the concert film Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles. In 2021, she published By, Billie Eilish, a photo book built around her own selection of images from her life and career. In the product world, she launched the vegan, cruelty-free perfume brand Eilish in 2021 and later collaborated with Converse on “Converse x Billie Eilish By You” in 2024. Her advocacy has been especially visible in climate and animal rights work.
She signed an open letter urging world leaders to act against climate-induced poverty, took part in a campaign encouraging young people to use technology for environmental advocacy, hosted the 6-day climate seminar Overheated in London, and allowed CoralWatch to use “Ocean Eyes” in an awareness campaign focused on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. She has also spoken publicly on women’s rights, written and produced the short film Not My Responsibility in response to body shaming, aligned herself with the US abortion rights movement, and used performances of “Your Power” to address the exploitation of young women. Those projects show an artist whose career has moved far beyond recording songs, while still keeping music at the center of everything.
