Kanye West, who legally changed his name to Ye in 2021, built one of the most influential and commercially successful catalogs in modern hip-hop. Born in Atlanta on June 8, 1977, and raised primarily in Chicago, he first became widely known as a producer whose soul-sampling work helped shape recordings by Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Alicia Keys, Ludacris, and other major artists.

West’s production on Jay-Z’s The Blueprint helped establish his reputation, but record companies were slower to accept him as a rapper. After a 2002 car accident left his jaw fractured, he recorded “Through the Wire” and transformed the experience into the defining early single of his solo career.

The College Dropout arrived in 2004 with songs about faith, education, family, class, racism, ambition, and self-doubt. Its success began a sequence of albums that repeatedly changed West’s production style. Late Registration expanded his arrangements through orchestration and collaboration with Jon Brion, while Graduation moved toward synthesizers, electronic music, and arena-scale hooks.

808s & Heartbreak replaced conventional rap performance with Auto-Tuned singing, stark electronic percussion, and emotionally exposed writing. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy followed with dense, maximal production and an extensive guest cast, while Yeezus stripped the music back to abrasive electronic textures and industrial rhythms.

The Life of Pablo combined gospel, soul, trap, electronic music, and a deliberately changeable digital release. The seven-song Ye and the collaborative Kids See Ghosts album with Kid Cudi emerged from West’s 2018 Wyoming sessions. Jesus Is King then shifted his work toward gospel and Christian hip-hop.

Donda, named for West’s mother, became his tenth solo studio album in 2021. Donda 2 first appeared in unfinished form through the Stem Player in 2022 and received a substantially revised 21-song streaming release in 2025. The two Vultures albums with Ty Dolla $ign arrived in 2024 under the ¥$ name.

West released Bully in March 2026 through YZY and gamma. The 18-song album returned to soul samples, Auto-Tuned singing, concise arrangements, and collaborators including Travis Scott, CeeLo Green, Lauryn Hill, and Peso Pluma. A 32-track deluxe edition followed in June with two additional songs, alternate versions, and SoFi visualizer audio.

Beyond his solo catalog, West recorded Watch the Throne with Jay-Z, Kids See Ghosts with Kid Cudi, and Vultures 1 and Vultures 2 with Ty Dolla $ign. He also served as the central creative figure on the GOOD Music compilation Cruel Summer.

West has won 24 Grammy Awards across rap, R&B, gospel, production, and collaborative categories. His influence can be heard in the growth of melodic rap, emotional Auto-Tuned vocals, maximalist album production, gospel-inflected hip-hop, and the increasingly fluid boundary between rap, pop, electronic music, and fashion-driven visual presentation.

West’s debut studio album joined soul-based production with songs about education, religion, family, work, race, and consumer culture. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.

Late Registration (2005)

Released: August 30, 2005

Working with Jon Brion and a broad group of musicians, West expanded his production through strings, brass, piano, unusual percussion, and layered arrangements. “Gold Digger” became a number-one single, and the album earned another Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.
