Slayer, formed in 1981 in Huntington Park, California, is one of the most influential bands in heavy metal history and a central force in the development of thrash metal. The group released twelve studio albums, including Reign in Blood (1986), South of Heaven (1988), and Seasons in the Abyss (1990), all of which became defining works of the genre. Slayer’s aggressive musical style, relentless live performances, and controversial lyrical themes earned the band a massive following while also attracting considerable scrutiny. After completing a farewell tour in 2019, Slayer returned for select festival performances beginning in 2024. The reunited lineup consists of Tom Araya, Kerry King, Gary Holt, and Paul Bostaph, and the band has continued to schedule limited live appearances rather than a full-scale return to regular touring.
Kerry King
Kerry King was one of Slayer’s founding members and has remained one of the two constant figures throughout the band’s history. As a guitarist and principal songwriter, King helped create the sharp, dissonant riffs, rapid solos, and confrontational sound that became central to Slayer’s identity. He appeared on every Slayer studio album and co-wrote many of the band’s best-known songs. Following Slayer’s farewell tour, King formed his own band and released the solo album From Hell I Rise in 2024. He also returned for Slayer’s select reunion performances beginning that year.
Tom Araya
Tom Araya joined Slayer at its inception as bassist and lead vocalist and remained with the group throughout its entire recording career. Born in Chile and raised in the United States, Araya became known for a commanding vocal style that ranged from rapid-fire delivery to sustained screams. His bass playing and unmistakable voice appeared on every Slayer album. Although he stepped away from regular touring after the band’s 2019 farewell, Araya returned to the stage when Slayer resumed select live performances in 2024.
Paul Bostaph
Paul Bostaph joined Slayer in 1992, replacing Dave Lombardo on drums. He appeared on Divine Intervention (1994), Undisputed Attitude (1996), Diabolus in Musica (1998), and God Hates Us All (2001). Bostaph left the band in 2001 but returned in 2013 and played on Slayer’s final studio album, Repentless (2015). His speed, precision, and physical playing style suited the demands of Slayer’s music, and he remained through the farewell tour and returned for the band’s later reunion performances. Outside Slayer, Bostaph has also played with Exodus, Testament, Forbidden, and Kerry King’s solo band.
Gary Holt
Gary Holt joined Slayer’s touring lineup in 2011 while Jeff Hanneman was unable to perform. After Hanneman’s death in 2013, Holt remained with the band through its final studio album and farewell tour. Although he did not contribute to the songwriting on Repentless, his lead guitar work appeared on the album, and his extensive background with Exodus made him a natural fit for Slayer’s aggressive style. Holt returned with the band for its select reunion performances beginning in 2024 while continuing his work with Exodus.
Jeff Hanneman
Jeff Hanneman was a founding guitarist and one of Slayer’s most important songwriters. His riffs, solos, and dark lyrical ideas helped define the band’s sound from its earliest recordings through World Painted Blood (2009). Hanneman wrote or co-wrote many of Slayer’s most enduring songs, including “Angel of Death,” “Raining Blood,” “South of Heaven,” “War Ensemble,” and “Seasons in the Abyss.” Illness prevented him from touring regularly after 2011, and he died in 2013. His influence remains central to Slayer’s legacy and to the broader development of thrash metal.
Dave Lombardo
Dave Lombardo was Slayer’s original drummer and is widely regarded as one of the most influential drummers in heavy metal. His speed, double-bass technique, and unpredictable fills played a major role in the sound of albums including Show No Mercy, Hell Awaits, Reign in Blood, South of Heaven, and Seasons in the Abyss. Lombardo’s first tenure lasted from 1981 to 1986, and he returned from 1987 to 1992. He rejoined again in 2001 and remained until 2013. Outside Slayer, he has performed with Fantômas, Suicidal Tendencies, Testament, Mr. Bungle, the Misfits, and numerous other projects.
Jon Dette
Jon Dette briefly served as Slayer’s drummer during two transitional periods. He first joined in 1996 after Paul Bostaph’s departure and toured with the band before Bostaph returned. Dette again filled in during 2013 after Dave Lombardo left the touring lineup. Although he did not appear on a Slayer studio album, he helped the band complete important live commitments. Outside Slayer, Dette has performed with Testament, Iced Earth, Anthrax, Heathen, and other metal acts.
