Slayer, formed in 1981 in Huntington Park, California, is one of the most influential bands in the heavy metal genre, particularly known for their role in establishing the thrash metal subgenre. Over the years, Slayer released twelve studio albums, two live albums, a box set, and several music videos and compilations. Their aggressive musical style and controversial themes helped them gain a massive following, although they also attracted significant media scrutiny. Notable albums such as Reign in Blood (1986), South of Heaven (1988), and Seasons in the Abyss (1990) are often cited as influential benchmarks in the genre. The band’s lineup changed several times throughout their career before they disbanded following a farewell tour that concluded in 2019.

Kerry King

Kerry King was one of the founding members of Slayer and remained with the band until their disbandment in 2019. As the band’s lead guitarist, King was known for his aggressive playing style and as a key songwriter. His contributions to all of Slayer’s albums were significant, and his guitar solos and riffs are some of the most iconic in metal music. Outside of Slayer, King made notable guest appearances with other artists and is known for his outspoken personality and contributions to the metal genre’s development.

Tom Araya

Tom Araya, the bassist and lead vocalist, joined Slayer at its inception and was a constant presence until the band’s disbandment. Born in Chile and raised in the United States, Araya’s distinctive vocal style and lyrics were crucial to the band’s identity. He played on all of Slayer’s major releases and was known for his intense performance style. Beyond his work with Slayer, Araya’s personal life and views often contrasted with the band’s dark image, as he is known for his quiet and reflective nature off stage.

Paul Bostaph

Paul Bostaph joined Slayer in 1992 as the drummer, replacing Dave Lombardo. He played on several albums, including Divine Intervention (1994) and God Hates Us All (2001). Bostaph’s technical skill and speed were well-suited to Slayer’s demanding music style. He left the band in 2001 but rejoined in 2013 to contribute to Repentless (2015) and remained until the band’s end. Outside of Slayer, Bostaph has played with other notable bands such as Exodus and Testament, showcasing his versatility across various heavy metal subgenres.

Gary Holt

Gary Holt joined Slayer in 2011, initially as a touring guitarist filling in for Jeff Hanneman and later as a full member after Hanneman’s death in 2013. While Holt did not contribute to the songwriting on Slayer’s final album, Repentless, his guitar work was featured prominently. Known for his tenure with Exodus, one of the pioneering bands of the Bay Area thrash metal scene, Holt brought his unique style and experience, seamlessly fitting into Slayer’s lineup and contributing to their live performances and their final studio album.

Jeff Hanneman

Jeff Hanneman, a founding member of Slayer, was with the band from the beginning until his illness and subsequent death in 2013. Hanneman’s guitar playing and songwriting were integral to Slayer’s sound, contributing to all their albums up to World Painted Blood (2009). His riffs and musical themes, often dealing with dark and controversial subjects, helped define the band’s sound. Lombardo’s powerful and innovative drumming appears on many of Slayer’s most acclaimed albums, including Reign in Blood. Jon Dette

Jon Dette briefly drummed for Slayer, filling in during transitions between Paul Bostaph and Dave Lombardo. He played with the band during parts of 1996 and again in 2013. Although his time with Slayer was short, Dette contributed to their live performances, ensuring continuity during tours. Outside of Slayer, Dette has played with other significant metal bands such as Testament and Iced Earth, maintaining a respected career as a drummer in the heavy metal community.
