It was not easy to pick the top 10 Beach Boys love songs because, in all honesty, the majority of the songs The Beach Boys recorded were love songs. Brian Wilson wrote about girls, cars, the beach, summer, youth, and of course love, which ties into all those topics in one way or another. No matter how simple some of the songs may have sounded at first, the depth of these recordings from the melodies, the arrangements, and obviously the harmonies were on a level that almost nobody has ever achieved in rock and roll music history. If there was one band that gave the Beatles a run for their money, it wasn’t the Stones; it was the Beach Boys. And it all started with the pen of Brian Wilson, that fueled some of the most brilliant and loved harmonies ever.
# 10 – The Night Was So Young – The Beach Boys L0ve You
We open with one that has been written about many times because of its backstory. In “The Night Was So Young,” Carl Wilson delivers a quietly potent vocal for this 1977 ballad from The Beach Boys Love You, written and produced by Brian Wilson and recorded at Brother Studios in California between 1976 and 1977. Brian penned it about Debbie Keil, a woman he referred to as a “golden-haired angel,” capturing his conflicted fixation on someone he longed for who had to hide their relationship. The lyrics center on romantic yearning and confusion, with lines like “has to hide” and “won’t even try,” ending with the plea, “let me come over to you. This is one of the band’s last original gems.
# 9 – You Still Believe in Me – Pet Sounds
So many of the Beach Boys’ love songs dig much deeper into the tribulations of love, questioning all there is to do with the most powerful force in nature. That was Brian Wilson’s gift and, of course, his torment. “You Still Belove In Me” brings up many of those questions he always had about life and love. This one was released on Pet Sounds in 1966.
# 8 – All I Wanna Do – Sunflower
The lyrics may be simple, as simple as a love song can get. However, the melody, harmonies, and production are simply mesmerizing, and really, what more do you want than that? “All I Wanna Do” appeared on the Beach Boys’ Sunflower album, released on August 31, 1970. Mike Love sang lead vocals on the track.
# 7 – Caroline No – Pet Sounds
It’s amazing how songs like this can be so beautiful and yet so sad and tragic at the same time. That’s love, baby. When we’re talking about the music of Brian Wilson, we’re not just talking about emotion, we’re talking about genius. Some of us recognized that early on, while others just felt the beauty and joy his music brought us. Over the years, more and more people came to realize how brilliant this man truly was. It’s so sad that he has passed, and it’s heartbreaking that one of the greatest musical minds of all time is no longer with us. Listening to songs like “Caroline, No” makes that loss feel even more painful
# 6 – We’ll Run Away – All Summer Long
While the concept of running away together to get married because no one else believes two people should be together for various reasons goes all the way back to the story of Romeo and Juliet, there’s just something special about it when Brian Wilson writes one. This gem was released on the Beach Boys album All Summer Long released in 1964. Brian Wilson sang the lead vocal on the track.
# 5 – Forever – Sunflower
Everyone loved Dennis Wilson. Forever was his shining moment on record. This one is incredibly haunting and beautiful at the same time. “Forever,” was written by Dennis Wilson and Gregg Jakobson and released on Sunflower in 1970. It was released as the B-side to “Cool, Cool Water.” His brother Brian instantly fell in love with the song and the recording, calling it one of his favorites.
# 4 – Kiss Me, Baby
Those harmonies at the song’s start get me every time. There has never been another sound like that in rock and roll. You don’t even need to know the lyrics to fall in love with this song; it’s just that good. Mike Love sang lead vocals on this striking track written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love. Kiss Me Baby was released as the B-side to the band’s mega hit “Help Me, Rhonda” in 1965.
# 3 – Surfer Girl – Pet Sounds
As one of the most iconic songs ever recorded, its lyrical meaning is almost overshadowed by the song’s spectacular melody, chord changes, and harmonies. When listening to the song You’re just overwhelmed by it’s brilliance. But yet indeed at its core it is a heartbreaking love song. The lyrics were directly inspired by Judy Bowles, Wilson’s first serious girlfriend. It was released as a single on July 22, 1963, with “Little Deuce Coupe” as its B-side.
# 2 – Wouldn’t It Be Nice
There was definitely a challenge in picking between these two songs for the top spot. Two of the most iconic Beach Boys songs of all time also happen to be two of the band’s most powerful love songs. Coudl there be a better song to open up one of the most legendary albums of all time in Pet Sounds? Supposedly, this song took longer to record than any other song on the record. You can hear why the production is perfect. This one was a big hit, reaching number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
# 1 – God Only Knows
Every time I hear this song, I can’t help but remember the opening sequence in the legendary HBO television drama Big Love that starred the late Bill Paxton and the sensational Chloë Sevigny, as well as the marvelous Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Ginnifer Goodwin. HBO must have paid a fortune to use this song. This is not only the Beach Boys’ Greatest Love Song but perhaps the greatest song Brian Wilson has ever written. It’s right up there with Good Vibrations and I go back and forth between these two. It was originally not a big hit in the US, as it just barely broke into the top 40, peaking at number 39 on the US Billboard 100. Yet, over time it has grown to be lauded as one of the greatest songs ever written
