Iron Maiden formed in London in 1975 under the leadership of bassist and principal songwriter Steve Harris. The band became one of the defining groups of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal through intricate compositions, harmonized guitars, driving bass lines, theatrical concerts, and songs inspired by history, literature, mythology, war, and film.

The self-titled debut album appeared in 1980 with Paul Di’Anno on vocals, followed by Killers in 1981. Bruce Dickinson joined for The Number of the Beast in 1982, beginning a classic run that continued through Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

After lineup changes during the 1990s, Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith returned in 1999. The reunited six-member lineup of Dickinson, Harris, Smith, Dave Murray, Janick Gers, and Nicko McBrain recorded Brave New World, Dance of Death, A Matter of Life and Death, The Final Frontier, The Book of Souls, and Senjutsu.

Senjutsu, released in 2021, remains Iron Maiden’s most recent studio album as of July 16, 2026. Its ten songs include “The Writing on the Wall,” “Stratego,” “Lost in a Lost World,” “Days of Future Past,” “Darkest Hour,” “Death of the Celts,” “The Parchment,” and “Hell on Earth.”

Nicko McBrain played his final touring concert with Iron Maiden in São Paulo in December 2024 after 42 years behind the drum kit. He stepped back from touring, and British Lion drummer Simon Dawson joined the live lineup for the Run for Your Lives World Tour in 2025 and 2026.

The Run for Your Lives tour celebrated Iron Maiden’s first 50 years with material drawn primarily from the band’s 1980 through 1992 catalog. The group remained active on the road throughout 2026, while its official studio discography continued to list 17 albums ending with Senjutsu.

Iron Maiden’s mascot Eddie, elaborate stage productions, independent approach to touring, and loyal international audience have become inseparable from the music. The band’s recordings range from compact singles such as “Run to the Hills” and “The Trooper” to extended works including “Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” “Empire of the Clouds,” and “Hell on Earth.”
