In April 2025, more than a decade after her last solo studio album, Stevie Nicks revealed she had begun work on a new record she said would be her most personal project to date. The legendary singer-songwriter announced the news during an appearance at the Pollstar Awards, where she was inducted into the Pollstar Live Music Hall of Fame.

The project, which Nicks called The Ghost Record as a working title, began taking shape during an extended stay in a Los Angeles hotel. Nicks had temporarily relocated because of wildfires affecting her neighborhood. What began as unplanned downtime sparked a fresh wave of creativity.

Rather than allow the isolation to linger, she used the time to reflect and write. Nicks said she had written seven new songs during that period, each drawing directly from her life, memories, and emotional experiences.

Unlike some of her earlier material, which often leaned into poetic abstraction, Nicks said these songs would tell autobiographical stories with unusual directness. She described them as real stories from her life in which she was not “pulling any punches.”

Among the inspirations for the new material was a vivid memory from the 1980s involving Prince. Nicks recalled visiting him around the time of the Purple Rain premiere and attempting to give him a gold necklace. According to Nicks, Prince rejected the gift and told her that she always brought him presents but never brought him herself. Nicks said that exchange became part of one of the songs she was writing.

The project would have been Nicks’ first solo studio album since 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, released in 2014, and her first solo album of newly written material since In Your Dreams, which arrived in 2011. 24 Karat Gold consisted primarily of newly recorded versions of songs Nicks had written years earlier.

In the years before the 2025 announcement, Nicks had remained active through touring, collaborations, and individual recordings. In 2023, she contributed vocals to “Oil” on Gorillaz’s album Cracker Island. In 2024, she released “The Lighthouse,” a politically charged single focused on women’s rights.

At the time of the album announcement, Nicks had also expanded her 2025 touring schedule with additional solo dates and co-headlining appearances with longtime friend and collaborator Billy Joel. Several of those plans later changed because of Billy Joel’s health issues and Nicks’ own fractured shoulder, which forced additional rescheduling during 2025.

Stevie Nicks had long been recognized for her ability to merge emotional vulnerability with lyrical mysticism. From her work with Fleetwood Mac to her acclaimed solo career, her songs had stood out for their storytelling power and distinctive point of view. With the new project, she said she intended to tell some of those stories more directly than she had in the past.

At the time of the original announcement, no release date had been set for the project. As of September 30, 2026, no official release date had been announced. Reports in April 2026 that The Ghost Record would be released on May 26, 2026 were denied by representatives for Nicks, who said the album was not yet finished.
