Luther Vandross was born in Lower Manhattan and grew up in the Bronx, where music filled the family home and helped define his path. He was the youngest of four children in a household that cherished records and live performance. His mother, Mary Ida Vandross, a nurse, supported his ambitions after the death of his father when Luther was eight years old.
