Coco Jones built her career at the intersection of music and screen work, moving from early Disney visibility to a major-label R&B breakthrough that earned platinum certification and Grammy recognition. Her full name is Courtney Michaela Ann Jones. She is from Columbia, South Carolina, and she was raised in Lebanon, Tennessee. She has been active professionally since 2006, and her work has been released through Hollywood Records, High Standardz, and Def Jam, with Warner Chappell Music listed as her publisher.
Her early foundation started with childhood auditions and performance opportunities, including singing “America the Beautiful” at her kindergarten graduation. At age nine, she met with Disney casting executives, then began working as an actor and songwriter for the company. In 2006, she competed on Radio Disney and became known there for her song “Real You.” In 2009, she was selected to perform on the “The Most Talented Kids” episode of the Maury Povich Show, and in 2010, she finished as the runner-up on season three of Radio Disney’s The Next Big Thing singing competition.
Disney television and film exposure followed quickly. In 2011, she guest-starred on So Random! and in 2012, she took her breakthrough acting role as Roxanne “Roxy” Andrews in the Disney Channel Original Movie Let It Shine, where she also contributed vocals connected to the soundtrack. She later appeared on Good Luck Charlie ” from 2012 to 2013. Around the same time, she released her debut project, titled Coco Jones, and launched a concert tour with an anti-bullying theme called UBU-Stop the Bullying.
Her first label recording era also produced her earliest chart success. After signing with Hollywood Records, she co-wrote and recorded original music while working with producer Rob Galbraith. Her debut single, “Holla at the DJ,” premiered on Radio Disney on December 6, 2012, with an iTunes release the next day, and the music video premiered on Disney Channel on December 12. Her EP Made Of was released on March 12, 2013, and reached the top ten of the Billboard Heatseekers chart. She toured with Mindless Behavior later that year. She also worked in the studio with David Banner and Ester Dean, and she received a Radio Disney Music Award for “Funniest Celebrity Take.”
After leaving Hollywood Records, she continued releasing music independently while expanding her acting resume. She released “Pepermint” in 2014, appeared in a Fanta commercial in 2017, and released songs that included “Just My Luck” in 2018 and “Depressed” in 2019. In 2019, she released the eight track EP H.D.W.Y. She later spoke publicly in 2020 about negative industry experiences connected to colorism, and she released “Hollyweird” in November 2020. Her screen work during this broader period included film roles, and in 2021, she was cast as Hilary Banks in Peacock’s drama series Bel-Air, which premiered in February 2022 and ran through 2025.
Her biggest commercial leap in music arrived with her return to major label releases in 2022. She signed with High Standardz and Def Jam Recordings, released “Caliber” on March 25, 2022, and followed with the EP What I Didn’t Tell You, released November 4, 2022. In October 2022, she released “ICU,” which became her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, earned RIAA platinum certification, and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. That Grammy win was part of five total nominations she received at the same ceremony, including a nomination for Best New Artist. The “ICU” era also included a deluxe edition of What I Didn’t Tell You released in 2023, and it included additional tracks.
