Elle King’s career is rooted in Los Angeles, California, where she was raised and exposed early to music, film, and performance. She is the daughter of Rob Schneider and London King, but her path into music developed independently through hands on musicianship rather than industry positioning. She learned banjo and guitar as a teenager and began performing in small venues while still in high school, developing a raw vocal style shaped by blues, rock, country, and R&B influences.
Her professional entry into the business began after she signed a recording contract with RCA Records in 2012. Early singles such as “Playing for Keeps” and “Good to Be a Man” introduced her as an artist who leaned into grit and swagger rather than polish. Her debut studio album, Love Stuff, was released in 2015 and marked the moment her career reached a national audience. The album blended blues rock, pop, soul, and R&B textures, setting her apart from the contemporary pop landscape of the time.
The breakout moment of her career came with the single “Ex’s & Oh’s,” which became a major commercial success. The song reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and topped Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart, making her the first female artist to do so with a debut single. “Ex’s & Oh’s” also reached number one on the Adult Pop Songs chart and achieved multi-platinum certification in the United States. The song’s success drove Love Stuff to strong chart performance and established King as a mainstream artist without softening her vocal edge.
Elle King followed her debut with Shake the Spirit in 2018, an album that expanded her songwriting toward themes of recovery, self-examination, and personal accountability. The album debuted in the top five on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart and included singles such as “Shame” and “Drunk and I Don’t Wanna Go Home,” the latter featuring Miranda Lambert. Her third studio album, Come Get Your Wife, arrived in 2022 and reflected a deeper commitment to country music, debuting at number one on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. To date, she has released three studio albums.
Her awards history reflects recognition across multiple genres. Elle King has received four Grammy Award nominations, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Rock Performance for “Ex’s & Oh’s.” She won the Academy of Country Music Award for New Female Artist of the Year in 2023 and received multiple nominations from the Country Music Association. These honors reflect her ability to move between rock, country, and R&B spaces without being confined to a single format.
Outside of music, King has maintained an active presence in film and television, appearing in projects such as Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo and Wild Cherry. She has also worked as a songwriter for other artists and contributed music to film soundtracks, including Ghostbusters in 2016. Her career is often defined by independence rather than output volume, with long gaps between albums that align with personal changes rather than commercial demand. Elle King is widely valued for maintaining authenticity across genres while building a catalog that reflects lived experience rather than manufactured identity.
