Melbourne gave Little River Band its launch in March 1975, but the group came together from musicians who had already built reputations in other successful Australian acts. Glenn Shorrock had sung with the Twilights and Axiom, Beeb Birtles came from Zoot, and Graeham Goble and Derek Pellicci had been part of Mississippi. Under the management of Glenn Wheatley, the band was put together with international success in mind, especially in the United States.
The band’s name came from a road sign pointing toward Little River on the route from Melbourne to Geelong, and the first performance took place on March 20, 1975, at Martini’s Hotel in Carlton. The early lineup featured Shorrock, Birtles, Goble, Pellicci, Ric Formosa, and Roger McLachlan, establishing the polished vocal blend that became central to the group’s identity.
The band moved quickly after signing with EMI in May 1975 and recording at Armstrong Studios. Its debut album, Little River Band, reached Number 17 on the Kent Music Report albums chart and was certified gold in early 1976. The first single, “Curiosity (Killed the Cat),” climbed to Number 15, giving the group an early Australian hit. That first phase soon expanded beyond Australia with “It’s a Long Way There,” which reached Number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and introduced the band to American radio.
The success continued with six studio albums reaching the Australian top 10, including Diamantina Cocktail and First Under the Wire, both of which peaked at Number 2. Over time, Little River Band sold more than 30 million records and released a studio catalog that included Little River Band, After Hours, Diamantina Cocktail, Sleeper Catcher, First Under the Wire, Time Exposure, The Net, Playing to Win, No Reins, Monsoon, Get Lucky, Where We Started From, and Test of Time.
American audiences embraced the band in a major way, and that relationship became one of the defining features of its career. Ten singles reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, led by “Reminiscing,” which climbed to Number 3. Other major American hits included “Lady,” “Lonesome Loser,” “Cool Change,” “The Night Owls,” and “Man on Your Mind.” In Australia, the group placed nine singles in the top 20, while “Help Is on Its Way” became its only Number 1 single at home. “Love Is a Bridge” later reached Number 7 in Australia, giving the band one of its strongest late period hits. Those records kept Little River Band commercially visible across multiple eras and across both Australian and American markets.
The late 1970s and early 1980s brought both artistic success and internal tension. John Boylan co-produced Diamantina Cocktail and remained involved for the next two studio albums, helping shape the sound of the band’s strongest commercial period. At the same time, relationships inside the group became strained, and members increasingly recorded parts separately. Glenn Shorrock left in February 1982, opening the door for John Farnham to step in as lead vocalist. Wayne Nelson also moved further forward during this period, especially on “The Night Owls.”
David Briggs was forced out during the same unsettled stretch. The Farnham lineup carried the band through The Net, Playing to Win, and No Reins, before another major turn brought Shorrock and Pellicci back in 1987. That reunion helped produce Monsoon in 1988, which reached Number 9 in Australia and returned the band to the local top 10.
Recognition followed the band in ways that reflected both sales and enduring airplay. The 1976 to 1978 lineup of Glenn Shorrock, Graeham Goble, Beeb Birtles, George McArdle, David Briggs, and Derek Pellicci was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2004. In May 2001, APRA selected “Cool Change” as one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time. “Reminiscing” received a 5 Million Broadcast Citation from BMI in 2020 and had already become one of the most frequently played songs in the history of American radio, standing as the highest achieving Australian pop song internationally on that measure.
“Lady” also passed four million plays, and Graeham Goble earned additional BMI Million-Air recognition, including for “The Night Owls.” These honors confirmed that Little River Band’s strongest songs did far more than chart well, they stayed active in radio culture for decades.
The group’s history also reached beyond standard album and touring cycles. In 1988, Little River Band performed at the opening of World Expo 88 in Brisbane and toured that year with Glenn Frey of the Eagles. Its live work also extended into orchestral collaborations, first with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra on Backstage Pass in 1978 and later with the Craig Turley Rock Symphony for Black Tie in 2020.
The later years were marked by legal disputes over the band name, especially after Birtles, Shorrock, and Goble began performing together as Birtles Shorrock Goble in 2002. Even with those conflicts, the group’s legacy held firm because the songs endured. Little River Band remains loved for the strength of its harmonies, the consistency of its songwriting, and a catalog that produced lasting radio staples such as “Help Is on Its Way,” “Reminiscing,” “Lady,” “Lonesome Loser,” “Cool Change,” and “The Night Owls.”
