Our 10 best songs with the word ‘black’ in the title showcase an assortment of deep tracks and, of course, legendary recordings with the word black in the title. It is one of the most popular words in the English language to be used in song titles, so it became very difficult to narrow this list down to only 10. There will be many classic songs missing from this list, but it comes down to just simple mathematics; we’re only picking 10. What are your favorites?
# 10 – Black Wings – Tom Waits
We open up with a creepy one from the legendary Tom Waits. The track was released on his Grammy Award-winning album Bone Machine in 1992. It sounds like it came off the soundtrack of a western horror film.
# 9 – Black Night – Bob Seger
It’s always good to invite the Detroit rocker to the party. Bob Seger’s “Black Night” was released on his memorable album Beautiful Loser. It was his eighth studio album. It was released in 1975.
# 8 – Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress..The Hollies
I always found it hard to believe this was the same band that put out songs like “Bus Stop.” But then again, it really wasn’t without Graham Nash in the band. But that doesn’t mean they weren’t still a great band, as this is one of the best tracks they ever released. What a guitar lick!
# 7 – Black Sabbath – Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath’s debut album scared the jeez out of everyone between that haunting album cover and the point in this song when Ozzy screams, ” God Help Me.”
# 6 – Black Magic Woman – Fleetwood Mac / Santana
Both versions of this song are just so good, we had to include both on this list. Peter Green composed the song for Fleetwood Mac in 1968. Santana recorded the song in 1970 for their album Abraxas.
# 5 – Black & White – Three Dog Night
Three Dog Night has always been one of our favorite bands here at the site. Over the years, we have noticed that every time we publish an article on Three Dog Night, it goes through the roof. Everyone loved this band.
# 4 – Paint It Black – The Rolling Stones
It’s hard to pose any argument against our top four picks. It doesn’t get more legendary than the next three songs in classic rock history. The song was originally released as a standalone single in 1966. It was later included on the Aftermath album, as well as a million Rolling Stones greatest hits albums to come.
# 3 – Back In Black – AC/DC
I wonder how many people thought of this song first when they saw the title of this article. The song and the album of the same name marked the start of a new era for the band, with Brian Johnson as its new lead singer. The album was released in 1980.
# 2 – Black Water – The Doobie Brothers
I have not met too many old school Doobie Brothers fans who have said this was not their favorite Doobie Brothers song. At the very least, it is one of the most beloved songs in their catalog. The song was originally released on the What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits album. The album came out way back in 1975, over 50 years ago. I remember it like yesterday.
# 1 – Black Dog – Led Zeppelin
If there’s a Led Zeppelin track that meets the criteria for a list like this, it’s definitely going to be included. But for this one, we’re not just including it, we’re putting it in the number one spot because this very well is one of the top 10 Led Zeppelin songs ever released. “Black Dog” was the opening track to Led Zeppelin’s fourth album, but I doubt that anyone ever the age of 40 doesn’t already know that.
