Gorillaz turned the idea of a rock band inside out by making the characters fictional, the music wide open, and the whole operation feel like a living comic book wired into a recording studio. Formed in London, England, in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, the band was built around four animated members: 2-D on vocals, keyboards, and melodica; Murdoc Niccals on bass guitar; Noodle on guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals; and Russel Hobbs on drums. Albarn became the only permanent musical contributor, while Hewlett shaped the band’s visual world through animation, artwork, videos, interviews, comic strips, and short cartoons. The project began after Albarn and Hewlett, who were sharing a flat on Westbourne Grove in London, developed the idea of a manufactured band that could comment on the manufactured nature of pop culture while still making music with real force and imagination.
The first Gorillaz recording was “Ghost Train,” later released as the B-side to “Rock the House.” Albarn recorded much of the band’s debut album from 1998 to 2000 at Studio 13 in London, with additional work at Geejam Studios in Jamaica. Producer Dan “the Automator” Nakamura helped complete the record, while Del the Funky Homosapien, Kid Koala, Ibrahim Ferrer, Miho Hatori, and Tina Weymouth became part of the album’s collaborative design. Gorillaz was released on March 26, 2001, reached number 3 on the UK Albums Chart and number 14 on the Billboard 200, and sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. “Clint Eastwood” became the breakthrough single, followed by “19-2000,” “Rock the House,” and “Tomorrow Comes Today.” The debut album went triple platinum in the United Kingdom and double platinum in Europe, proving that the animated concept had commercial power far beyond a clever visual hook.
The band’s second album, Demon Days, released on May 11, 2005, pushed Gorillaz into an even larger global audience. Produced by Danger Mouse, the album debuted at number 1 on the UK Albums Chart and number 6 on the Billboard 200. It became the band’s most successful album, going six times platinum in the United Kingdom, double platinum in the United States, and triple platinum in Australia. “Feel Good Inc.,” featuring De La Soul, topped Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart in the United States for eight consecutive weeks and earned Gorillaz the Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. The album also produced “Dare,” “Dirty Harry,” “Kids with Guns,” and “El Mañana.” By this point, Gorillaz had become a rare act that could pull hip-hop, electronic music, dub, alternative rock, and pop into the same universe without making any of it feel forced.
Gorillaz continued expanding the concept with Plastic Beach in 2010, an album built around environmental themes, synth-pop textures, and a larger guest roster. The record featured collaborators including Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack, Mos Def, Lou Reed, Mark E. Smith, and Little Dragon. The band followed it with The Fall, released on December 25, 2010, after being recorded on the road, mainly on Damon Albarn’s iPad, during the Escape to Plastic Beach Tour. Those two records showed how flexible the project had become. Gorillaz could function as a studio experiment, a touring machine, a visual narrative, and a revolving-door collaboration platform simultaneously.
After a hiatus, Gorillaz returned with Humanz in 2017, their first studio album in seven years. The record featured a large cast of guests and introduced a more crowded, party-like sound that fit the band’s apocalyptic dance floor mood. The Now Now followed in 2018 with a more focused musical emphasis on Albarn. In 2020, Gorillaz launched Song Machine, a web series built around standalone singles and accompanying videos with different guests. That project became Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, featuring Robert Smith, Elton John, 6lack, Beck, Leee John, Fatoumata Diawara, Peter Hook, Georgia, Tony Allen, Skepta, Schoolboy Q, and others. “The Pink Phantom,” with Elton John and 6lack, also placed Gorillaz in direct conversation with R&B, pop, and alternative music at once.
The band’s later work continued to push the format. Cracker Island, released in 2023, included the title track with Thundercat, “New Gold” with Tame Impala and Bootie Brown, “Baby Queen,” “Skinny Ape,” and “Silent Running” with Adeleye Omotayo. The album also featured Stevie Nicks, Bad Bunny, Beck, and Adeleye Omotayo, with production from Greg Kurstin. Gorillaz’s ninth studio album, The Mountain, was tied to the band’s 25th anniversary era and drew musical and thematic inspiration from India. Across their career, Gorillaz have released nine studio albums: Gorillaz, Demon Days, Plastic Beach, The Fall, Humanz, The Now Now, Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, Cracker Island, and The Mountain.
The awards tell part of the story, but the bigger achievement is how much ground Gorillaz covered without losing their identity. The band has won a Grammy Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, an NME Award, and four MTV Europe Music Awards. Gorillaz also received 11 Brit Award nominations and won Best British Group at the 2018 Brit Awards. Their tours evolved from early performances where the musicians were hidden behind a screen, to shows built around animated projections, to full live band productions with Albarn visible onstage. That changing presentation became part of the appeal. Fans loved the songs, but they also loved the world around them, a place where “Clint Eastwood,” “Feel Good Inc.,” “Dare,” “Dirty Harry,” “On Melancholy Hill,” “Cracker Island,” and “New Gold” could all exist under the same strange roof.
Outside the usual album cycle, Gorillaz built an entire multimedia identity. The band’s early website functioned as an interactive tour of the fictional Kong Studios, complete with games and exploratory features. Hewlett directed the band’s early music videos, and the group released visual collections including Phase One: Celebrity Take Down and Phase Two: Slowboat to Hades. The band’s fictional history was expanded in the book Rise of the Ogre, written by Cass Browne and featuring new artwork by Hewlett. Gorillaz also staged technically ambitious performances, including 3D-animated appearances at the 2002 Brit Awards and later Grammy-related performances featuring visual technology. In 2021, the band performed three new songs during a free concert at London’s O2 Arena exclusively for National Health Service employees and their families, a specific gesture that connected the project’s massive platform to workers who had been central to public life during the pandemic years.
