Don Williams earned the nickname the Gentle Giant because he could hold an audience without raising his voice. Born in Floydada, Texas, in 1939 and raised in the state, he developed a warm baritone and a manner of singing that placed the words at the center of every performance. His understated delivery worked particularly well with songs about devotion, home, regret, and the ordinary moments that shape a life. During a long country music career, he became one of the genre’s most recognizable singers and helped introduce Nashville music to audiences far beyond the United States.
His career began in the 1960s with the Pozo-Seco Singers, a folk-pop group formed with Susan Taylor and Lofton Kline. The group recorded for Columbia Records and found success with ‘Time,’ ‘I Can Make It with You,’ and ‘Look What You’ve Done.’ By the beginning of the 1970s, Williams had moved into country music as a solo performer. Working with songwriter and producer Allen Reynolds, he released his first solo records on JMI before making the albums that established his reputation with country radio.
Don Williams Volume One introduced ‘Come Early Morning,’ ‘Amanda,’ and ‘The Shelter of Your Eyes,’ while his subsequent recordings produced an extraordinary sequence of hits. ‘You’re My Best Friend,’ ‘Some Broken Hearts Never Mend,’ ‘Tulsa Time,’ ‘It Must Be Love,’ and ‘I Believe in You’ became central parts of the country music soundtrack of the 1970s and early 1980s. Bob McDill, Wayland Holyfield, Roger Cook, and other accomplished writers contributed songs perfectly suited to Williams’s voice, while his own songwriting remained an important element of the early records.
Williams continued recording through changes in Nashville’s musical climate, making albums for MCA, Capitol, RCA, and independent labels. His catalog ranged from the reflective ‘Good Ole Boys Like Me’ and ‘Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good’ to the romantic ‘If Hollywood Don’t Need You’ and ‘Love Is on a Roll.’ He also made a memorable duet recording of ‘If I Needed You’ with Emmylou Harris and later worked with Alison Krauss and Keith Urban. After a period away from recording, he returned with And So It Goes and Reflections, demonstrating that the appeal of his singing had never depended on changing fashions.
Williams died in 2017, but previously unheard recordings from sessions made between 1979 and 1984 finally appeared in 2026 on Epilogue: The Cellar Tapes. Those performances brought listeners back to a remarkable period of his career while adding another chapter to his recorded legacy. From the early Pozo-Seco Singers to his solo hits and final archival recordings, Williams remained an artist whose greatest strength was making the words sound natural. His music continues to reward listeners who look beyond the familiar singles and discover the songs tucked away on his albums.
