Sum 41 formed in Ajax, Ontario, in 1996, when high school friends Deryck Whibley and Steve Jocz decided to start a punk rock band. Initially a NOFX cover group, they quickly developed their own identity, blending skate punk, heavy metal, and pop-punk into a sound that would soon break through internationally. They signed with Island Records in 1999 after homemade videos and relentless live performances generated serious attention. The band released its debut EP, Half Hour of Power, in 2000, setting the stage for a rapid rise that would begin with the first full-length album one year later.

The debut studio album, All Killer No Filler, arrived in 2001 and included the breakthrough single “Fat Lip,” which reached number one on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart and became the band’s signature song. “In Too Deep” and “Motivation” further cemented Sum 41’s reputation for high-energy anthems, sharp hooks, and irreverent lyrics. The album went platinum in several countries and pushed the group into the mainstream. Does This Look Infected? followed in 2002 with a more aggressive and politically charged approach while retaining the band’s punk foundation. Songs including “Still Waiting” and “The Hell Song” reflected a maturing sound and lyrical direction.

Across its career, Sum 41 released eight studio albums: All Killer No Filler in 2001, Does This Look Infected? in 2002, Chuck in 2004, Underclass Hero in 2007, Screaming Bloody Murder in 2011, 13 Voices in 2016, Order in Decline in 2019, and the final double album, Heaven :x: Hell, in 2024. Each record demonstrated an evolution in musical style and lyrical themes. Chuck, shaped in part by the band’s dangerous experience in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, introduced heavier riffs and darker subject matter. The album won the Juno Award for Rock Album of the Year in 2005.

Despite lineup changes, including the departures of drummer Steve Jocz and guitarist Dave Baksh, who later returned, Whibley remained the driving force behind the band’s sound and vision. Albums including 13 Voices and Order in Decline presented a more personal and emotionally raw approach informed by Whibley’s struggles with addiction and recovery. The band’s blend of punk, metal, and alternative rock kept its international audience loyal, while energetic live shows remained central to its identity.

Sum 41 received two Juno Awards from seven nominations, a Kerrang! Award, and one Grammy nomination. “Blood in My Eyes” was nominated for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards. The band’s music videos also received recognition from the MuchMusic Video Awards, reflecting its prominence during the early-2000s pop-punk era.

Outside of music, Sum 41 became involved in humanitarian work, most notably through a 2004 visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo with War Child Canada. The experience led to Chuck being named in honor of United Nations peacekeeper Chuck Pelletier, who helped the group evacuate during an outbreak of violence. Whibley later became an advocate for addiction recovery, speaking candidly about his health and encouraging others to seek help.

Sum 41 announced in 2023 that the band would disband after releasing Heaven :x: Hell and completing a farewell tour. The double album divided its 20 songs between a pop-punk-oriented Heaven disc and a heavier Hell disc. The final tour concluded with a concert at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena on January 30, 2025.

The band gave its final performance at the Juno Awards in Vancouver on March 30, 2025, when Sum 41 was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The recognition closed a career that carried the group from suburban Ontario rehearsals to an international audience while leaving behind one of the defining catalogs of its generation in punk and alternative rock.
