Conway Twitty built one of the most distinctive recording careers in American popular music, moving from late-1950s rock and roll into a long reign as a country-music superstar. Born Harold Lloyd Jenkins in Friars Point, Mississippi, in 1933, he grew up in the Mississippi Delta and Arkansas before recording his first material as a young rock-and-roll singer. His 1958 crossover breakthrough, “It’s Only Make Believe,” reached the top of the pop charts and became one of the defining songs of his early career.
Twitty’s move to country music during the 1960s was more than a change in arrangement. His commanding baritone and gift for conversational, emotionally direct performances proved perfectly suited to songs about heartbreak, reconciliation, and desire. Albums such as Next in Line, Hello Darlin’, and You’ve Never Been This Far Before established him as a major country star, while albums such as Mr. T and Southern Comfort helped carry that success into the 1980s.
His collaborations with Loretta Lynn formed another major part of the story. Their duet recordings, beginning with We Only Make Believe, produced classics such as “After the Fire Is Gone,” “Lead Me On,” “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man,” and “As Soon as I Hang Up the Phone.” Together they recorded ten original studio duet albums, followed by additional newly issued performances, and developed a stage partnership that became one of country music’s most celebrated.
Twitty continued releasing original albums for several labels through the early 1990s. His final studio album, Final Touches, appeared in 1993, the year he died at age 59. The songs in this alphabetical catalog span his early rockabilly and pop recordings, country studio albums, Loretta Lynn duets, gospel and holiday music, rare singles, and officially issued archival material, tracing the full breadth of his recording career.
