The Derek Trucks Band emerged from Jacksonville, Florida, in 1994 under the leadership of guitarist Derek Trucks. Still in his teens, Trucks had already developed a remarkable command of slide guitar and was drawing from blues, Southern rock, jazz, and Indian classical music. The band gradually developed a core lineup that included bassist Todd Smallie, drummer Yonrico Scott, keyboardist and flautist Kofi Burbridge, percussionist Count M’Butu, and vocalist Mike Mattison.

The band’s self-titled debut album arrived in 1997 through Landslide Records. The Derek Trucks Band introduced listeners to an instrumental sound that moved freely between blues, jazz, rock, and global influences, with Trucks’ slide guitar at the center. The album included interpretations of compositions associated with John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Wayne Shorter alongside original material.

Out of the Madness followed in 1998, combining blues standards and original compositions with guest appearances from Warren Haynes and other musicians. The record expanded the group’s roots-oriented side without abandoning the improvisational freedom established on the debut.

The band reached a broader audience with Joyful Noise in 2002. The album featured guest vocalists including Susan Tedeschi, Solomon Burke, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and Rubén Blades. Its blend of blues, soul, gospel, jazz, Latin music, and Indian classical traditions demonstrated how naturally the group could move between musical cultures.

Soul Serenade, released in 2003, continued that exploration through jazz, blues, soul, and world music. The following year, Live at Georgia Theatre captured the band in concert and marked Mike Mattison’s first appearance on a Derek Trucks Band album. Mattison’s powerful vocals became an essential part of the group’s later sound.

The 2006 studio album Songlines brought the band’s instrumental and vocal strengths together on recordings including “I’ll Find My Way,” “Crow Jane,” “Sahib Teri Bandi/Maki Madni,” “Chevrolet,” and “This Sky.” The related concert release Songlines Live documented the band’s ability to transform its studio material through extended improvisation and ensemble interplay.

In 2009, The Derek Trucks Band released Already Free, its sixth and final studio album. The record debuted at number nineteen on the Billboard 200 and won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Songs including “Down in the Flood,” “Don’t Miss Me,” “Get What You Deserve,” and “Back Where I Started” reflected a focused blend of blues, soul, rock, gospel, and Americana.

Roadsongs, recorded during the Already Free tour and released in 2010, became the band’s final live album. The Derek Trucks Band then went on hiatus as Trucks, Mattison, and Burbridge became part of the newly formed Tedeschi Trucks Band.

Across six studio albums and several live releases, The Derek Trucks Band created a catalog defined by musical curiosity, technical command, and a deep respect for blues and roots traditions. The group’s recordings remain an important chapter in Derek Trucks’ career and in the development of modern blues, jam, and Southern roots music.
