Dream Theater was formed in 1985 under the name Majesty at Berklee College of Music in Boston. They quickly rose to become one of the defining acts in the progressive metal genre. The band’s technical proficiency and complex compositions are complemented by their thematic and conceptually rich albums. Over the years, Dream Theater has released fifteen studio albums, starting with “When Dream and Day Unite” in 1989. Notable for their rigorous touring schedules, the group has cultivated a dedicated global fan base. The departure of founding drummer Mike Portnoy in 2010 marked a significant lineup change, but the band continued to produce music and tour extensively. Dream Theater’s impact on the progressive metal scene is underscored by multiple awards and nominations, including a Grammy nomination in 2012.

John Myung

John Myung, a founding member of Dream Theater, has been the band’s bassist since its inception in 1985. Known for his technical proficiency and quiet presence, Myung has contributed to all of Dream Theater’s albums. His bass playing is integral to the band’s sound, characterized by complex patterns that interweave with John Petrucci’s guitar lines. Outside of Dream Theater, Myung has been involved in the side project Platypus and released an instructional video for bass guitar. His significant contributions extend beyond performance to songwriting, particularly noticeable in tracks like “Learning to Live” and “Trial of Tears.”

John Petrucci

John Petrucci is another founding member of Dream Theater and serves as the band’s guitarist, producer, and occasional lyricist. Petrucci’s guitar work is highly regarded for its technical precision and speed, making him one of the most influential guitarists in the progressive metal community. He has played on all Dream Theater albums and is known for his complex compositions and solos, particularly in songs like “Under a Glass Moon” and “Metropolis—Part I: ‘The Miracle and the Sleeper.'” Outside of Dream Theater, Petrucci has released several solo albums and is a regular on the G3 tour alongside guitarists such as Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

Mike Portnoy

Mike Portnoy, the original drummer and a founding member of Dream Theater, was with the band from 1985 until his departure in 2010. His drumming is celebrated for its technical complexity and musicality, contributing significantly to the band’s dynamic sound. Portnoy played on every Dream Theater album from their debut in 1989 through to “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” in 2009. Beyond Dream Theater, Portnoy has been involved in numerous projects, including Transatlantic, The Winery Dogs, and Sons of Apollo. He is also known for his prolific session work and contributions to other artists’ albums.

James LaBrie

James LaBrie joined Dream Theater in 1991 and has been the band’s lead vocalist since then, starting with the album “Images and Words” in 1992. His powerful and dynamic vocal range has defined much of the band’s sound. Notable performances include “Pull Me Under,” the band’s most commercially successful single. Outside of Dream Theater, LaBrie has released several solo albums that explore a variety of musical styles, showing versatility beyond the progressive metal for which he is known.

Jordan Rudess

Jordan Rudess was recruited by Dream Theater in 1999 and first appeared on the album “Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory.” As the band’s keyboardist, Rudess has been pivotal in shaping their sound with his proficiency in both classical piano and electronic synthesizers. His contributions to the band’s complex compositions are particularly evident in tracks like “The Dance of Eternity” and “Octavarium.” Outside of the band, Rudess has a successful solo career and has developed music apps for iOS, further showcasing his interest and expertise in music technology.

Chris Collins

Chris Collins was Dream Theater’s original vocalist when the band was still known as Majesty. He joined in 1986 but parted ways with the band in 1987 before the recording of their debut album. Collins’ time with the band was short-lived and marked primarily by early live performances rather than studio recordings. After leaving Dream Theater, Collins remained relatively obscure in the music industry, with little public involvement in significant projects or bands.

Charlie Dominici

Charlie Dominici replaced Chris Collins as the vocalist of Dream Theater in 1987 and was part of the lineup for the band’s debut album, “When Dream and Day Unite” (1989). His tenure with the band was brief, leaving in 1989 after the first album. Dominici’s style differed significantly from that of his successors, featuring a more traditional heavy metal vocal approach, which contrasted with the progressive elements the band later embraced. Years after his departure, Dominici returned to the music scene with a progressive rock project named Dominici, where he released a trilogy of albums exploring themes similar to those found in Dream Theater’s work.

Kevin Moore

Kevin Moore was the original keyboardist for Dream Theater, joining at the band’s inception and departing after their third studio album, “Awake,” in 1994. Moore’s contributions during his tenure included not only his keyboard playing but also his role in shaping the band’s lyrical and emotional direction. His writing credits include significant tracks like “Space-Dye Vest” on “Awake.” After leaving Dream Theater, Moore focused on his solo project, Chroma Key, and later collaborated on various projects that explored ambient and electronic music, moving away from the progressive metal style.

Derek Sherinian

Derek Sherinian joined Dream Theater in 1994 after Kevin Moore’s departure and played with the band until 1999. He featured on two studio albums: “Falling into Infinity” (1997) and the live album “Once in a LIVEtime” (1998). Sherinian brought a distinctively flamboyant style to the band’s music, influenced by his background in hard rock and heavy metal keyboard techniques. After his departure from Dream Theater, Sherinian has had a prolific career, playing with notable artists such as Alice Cooper and Billy Idol, and forming the supergroup Sons of Apollo with former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy.

Mike Mangini

Mike Mangini joined Dream Theater in 2010, replacing founding drummer Mike Portnoy. He made his studio debut with the band on the album “A Dramatic Turn of Events” (2011). Mangini’s technical proficiency and speed have made significant contributions to the band’s sound in their recent albums, including “Dream Theater” (2013) and “The Astonishing” (2016). Before joining Dream Theater, Mangini was known for his work with Steve Vai, Extreme, and his educational contributions to the field of drumming, which included setting several World’s Fastest Drummer records. His involvement in music education continues alongside his role in Dream Theater.
