Granite Falls, North Carolina, shaped Eric Church long before Nashville ever did. He bought his first guitar at thirteen and began writing songs as a teenager, eventually playing local bars by his senior year of high school. While studying marketing at Appalachian State University, he continued performing regularly, often backed by a small group that included his brother and close friends. After college, he moved to Nashville with a catalog of original material and a clear determination to build a career on his own terms.
His entry into the industry began as a songwriter. In 2005, he co-wrote Terri Clark’s single “The World Needs a Drink” and placed “Whiskey Wings” on Dean Miller’s album Platinum. That traction led to a recording contract with Capitol Nashville. His debut single, “How ’Bout You,” reached number fourteen on the Hot Country Songs chart and introduced him as a new voice with edge and attitude. In 2006, he released his debut album, Sinners Like Me, which produced the Top Twenty singles “How ’Bout You,” “Two Pink Lines,” and “Guys Like Me,” establishing him as a rising act in country music.
The follow-up, Carolina, arrived in 2009 and delivered his first Top Ten country hit with “Love Your Love the Most,” followed by another Top Ten single, “Hell on the Heart.” His profile expanded further with his third studio album, Chief, released in 2011. The album debuted at number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Top Country Albums chart. It produced his first number one country single, “Drink in My Hand,” and another number one hit, “Springsteen,” which also crossed into the Top Twenty on the Billboard Hot 100. Chief earned the CMA Award for Album of the Year and received a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album, marking a decisive breakthrough in both commercial and critical acclaim.
Church continued that momentum with The Outsiders in 2014, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and produced the number one country singles “Give Me Back My Hometown” and “Talladega.” His 2015 release, Mr. Misunderstood, was issued as a surprise album and later won Album of the Year at the CMA Awards. Singles such as “Record Year” and “Round Here Buzz” both reached number one on the Country Airplay chart. In 2018, he released Desperate Man, followed in 2021 by the triple album project Heart & Soul. His eighth studio album, Evangeline vs. the Machine, was released on May 2, 2025, continuing a discography that now spans eight studio albums.
Throughout his career, Church has earned numerous industry honors. He won Top New Solo Vocalist at the ACM Awards in 2011 and has received numerous CMA Awards, including Album of the Year and Entertainer of the Year in 2020. He has earned several Grammy nominations, including nominations tied to Chief, “Springsteen,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” The Outsiders, and Desperate Man. His singles catalog includes multiple number one hits on the Country Airplay chart, including “Drink in My Hand,” “Springsteen,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” “Talladega,” “Record Year,” and “Round Here Buzz,” solidifying his standing as a consistent chart presence over more than a decade.
Outside of recording and touring, Church co-founded the Chief Cares Fund in 2013 with his wife, Katherine Blasingame. The foundation supports underprivileged families in Tennessee and North Carolina, provides assistance to orphans in Nepal, contributes to Humane Society no kill animal shelters, and has delivered Bibles to Haiti. He is also a minority owner of the Charlotte Hornets, expanding his involvement into professional sports ownership. These efforts, combined with a career built on writing or co-writing the majority of his own material, have contributed to his reputation as an artist who maintains control over his work while engaging directly with his audience and community.
