Filter was formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1993 by Richard Patrick, a former touring guitarist for Nine Inch Nails, and guitarist and programmer Brian Liesegang. Over its career, the band has released eight studio albums, including Short Bus (1995), which features the hit single “Hey Man, Nice Shot,” and Title of Record (1999), known for the hit “Take a Picture.” Their sound is characterized by a mix of industrial rock and alternative rock, a style that has evolved over the years through multiple lineup changes.

The band has undergone numerous transformations, with more than two dozen musicians contributing to its sound as full-time members, touring musicians, or session players. Richard Patrick remains the sole constant member and creative force behind the band. Filter’s eighth studio album, The Algorithm, was released in 2023, followed by The Algorithm: Ultra Edition in 2025. Filter continued touring throughout 2026, with another studio album in development.

Filter’s longevity can be attributed to its ability to adapt and incorporate different musical influences. Their albums have charted globally, and tracks such as “Hey Man, Nice Shot” and “Take a Picture” have achieved lasting recognition. Their body of work reflects a deep engagement with themes of personal struggle, introspection, and societal commentary.

Richard Patrick

Richard Patrick is the founder and frontman of Filter, serving as the band’s lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter since its inception in 1993. He was instrumental in creating Filter’s debut album, Short Bus, which achieved platinum status and established the band as a major act in the industrial rock scene. Patrick also contributed heavily to Title of Record, The Amalgamut (2002), and all subsequent Filter studio releases, including The Sun Comes Out Tonight (2013), Crazy Eyes (2016), and The Algorithm (2023).

Patrick’s musical journey began as a touring guitarist for Nine Inch Nails during the Pretty Hate Machine era. After departing in 1993 to form Filter with Brian Liesegang, he cemented his reputation as a multi-talented musician. Outside Filter, Patrick has been involved in several other projects, including the supergroup Army of Anyone alongside Robert and Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots and Ray Luzier. He has also contributed to film soundtracks, including “(Can’t You) Trip Like I Do,” a collaboration with The Crystal Method featured on the Spawn soundtrack. Patrick has remained the driving force behind Filter through every lineup change and, in 2026, also launched the side project A Place To Kill with Jim Louvau.

Jonathan “Jonny” Radtke

Jonathan “Jonny” Radtke first joined Filter in 2011 as a guitarist and backing vocalist. His contributions are prominently featured on the band’s sixth studio album, The Sun Comes Out Tonight (2013), where his guitar work added a fresh edge to Filter’s evolving sound. After leaving the band in 2015, Radtke rejoined in 2018 and contributed to The Algorithm (2023). He remains part of Filter’s current core lineup and was touring with the band in 2026.

Outside Filter, Radtke is known for his work with Kill Hannah, where he served as a guitarist and songwriter. He has also worked on his own project, Polar Moon, showcasing his versatility as a musician. Radtke’s return to Filter underscores his lasting connection to the band and its music.

Bobby Miller

Bobby Miller joined Filter in 2014, initially playing keyboards, programming, and guitar before transitioning to bass and backing vocals in 2019. His contributions are notable on Crazy Eyes (2016), where his programming and instrumental versatility helped shape the album’s experimental tone. He also contributed to The Algorithm (2023), further solidifying his place within the band. Miller remains Filter’s bassist and backing vocalist and was part of the 2026 touring lineup.

Miller’s career extends beyond Filter as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, vocalist, and session player. His versatility has made him a vital part of Filter’s modern lineup both onstage and in the studio.

Elias Mallin

Elias Mallin has served as Filter’s drummer during two periods, first in 2012 and 2013 and again from 2022 onward. He played drums on The Algorithm (2023), where his precision and dynamic range added a significant dimension to the album’s sound. Mallin returned to the live lineup after Greg Garman’s departure and remained Filter’s drummer during the band’s 2026 touring activity.

Outside Filter, Mallin has performed with numerous artists including Kesha, Noah Cyrus, Orianthi, and Kill Hannah. His broad touring and session background has made him one of the more experienced musicians in Filter’s modern lineup.

Brian Liesegang

Brian Liesegang was a founding member of Filter, forming the band with Richard Patrick in 1993. As the band’s guitarist, programmer, and co-writer, Liesegang played an essential role in creating the debut album, Short Bus (1995), and in developing the industrial rock sound that established Filter’s early identity. He departed in 1997 because of creative differences.

Liesegang reunited with Patrick from 2018 to 2019 for sessions originally intended as a follow-up to Short Bus. Material from those sessions later contributed to The Algorithm (2023). Outside Filter, Liesegang has worked as a producer, programmer, and collaborator across music, advertising, and film-related projects.

Frank Cavanagh

Frank Cavanagh joined Filter in 1995 as bassist and backing vocalist. He contributed to Title of Record (1999) and The Amalgamut (2002), becoming a major part of the band’s touring and recording lineup during its commercial peak. Cavanagh left Filter in 2002 after the Amalgamut touring cycle ended abruptly.

Cavanagh later served in the United States Army and returned for a one-off Filter performance in 2008. His bass work remains closely associated with the band’s late-1990s and early-2000s period.

Geno Lenardo

Geno Lenardo was Filter’s guitarist from 1995 to 2002, contributing to both Title of Record and The Amalgamut. His guitar work added depth to Filter’s sound, blending melodic riffs with heavy industrial elements. Lenardo’s playing was a major part of the band during the era that produced songs such as “Take a Picture” and “Where Do We Go from Here.”

After leaving Filter, Lenardo continued working as a musician, songwriter, and producer, including soundtrack work and collaborations with other rock and industrial artists. His career reflects a continued interest in pushing beyond conventional rock arrangements.

Matt Walker

Matt Walker served as Filter’s drummer from 1995 to 1997, performing primarily during the Short Bus touring cycle. Although he was not part of Filter’s regular studio-album lineup, his energetic drumming was important to the band’s early live performances.

Steve Gillis

Steve Gillis joined Filter in 1997 as the band’s drummer and performed on both Title of Record (1999) and The Amalgamut (2002). His powerful drumming provided a solid backbone for Filter’s sound during one of its most commercially successful periods.

Gillis left the band in 2002 along with other members of the lineup after Filter’s touring plans were halted. His recordings remain central to the sound of the band’s second and third studio albums.

Mika Fineo

Mika Fineo played drums for Filter from 2008 to 2012 and appeared on the band’s fifth studio album, The Trouble with Angels (2010). His energetic drumming was a key element in the album’s heavier, industrial-inspired sound.

Fineo has also worked with other rock artists and projects outside Filter, demonstrating his adaptability across different styles of heavy and alternative music.

Mitchell Marlow

Mitchell Marlow joined Filter in 2008 as a guitarist and contributed to the band’s touring efforts during the period surrounding Anthems for the Damned. While Marlow was not part of the studio personnel on that album, his guitar work became part of Filter’s live presentation during this era.

Marlow later focused extensively on production and songwriting, working with bands including In This Moment and He Is Legend. His career has combined his experience as a guitarist with his work behind the recording console.

John Spiker

John Spiker served as Filter’s bassist during the Anthems for the Damned era, joining the band for live performances from 2008 to 2010. His bass work helped anchor the live lineup during Filter’s return following the Army of Anyone period.

Phil Buckman

Phil Buckman played bass and provided backing vocals for Filter from 2010 to 2013. Although he did not contribute to a Filter studio album during his tenure, Buckman was a prominent part of the band’s live performances and touring lineup.

Outside Filter, Buckman has had a versatile career as a musician, actor, and broadcaster. He has also performed with Fuel and worked across television and radio projects.

Rob Patterson

Rob Patterson joined Filter as a guitarist for a brief period from 2010 to 2011. Although he did not record a studio album with the band, Patterson contributed to Filter’s live shows during this time.

Tim Kelleher

Jeff Fabb

Fabb is widely recognized for his work with Black Label Society and In This Moment, where his powerful and precise drumming has been a defining part of his career.

Chris Reeve

Chris Reeve joined Filter in 2015 and remained with the band through 2019. He played drums on Crazy Eyes (2016), where his hard-hitting style contributed to the album’s industrial and experimental sound.

Reeve joined the lineup alongside Oumi Kapila and Ashley Dzerigian during the creation of Crazy Eyes. His work on the album represents his most important recorded contribution to Filter.

Ashley Dzerigian

Ashley Dzerigian joined Filter’s mid-2010s lineup on bass and performed on Crazy Eyes (2016). Her playing became part of the lineup assembled around Richard Patrick, Bobby Miller, Oumi Kapila, and Chris Reeve during the writing, recording, and touring period surrounding the album.

Dzerigian has also performed with artists including Adam Lambert, CeeLo Green, and Cher. Her wide-ranging career demonstrates her versatility across rock, pop, and other styles.

Oumi Kapila

Oumi Kapila was Filter’s guitarist from 2015 to 2017 and contributed directly to Crazy Eyes (2016). His work on the album included guitar, programming, keyboards, string arrangements, and co-production contributions.

Greg Garman

Touring And Session Musicians

Alan Bailey

Alan Bailey joined Filter as a touring guitarist in 2002 during the The Amalgamut era. He was recruited for the live lineup when the band went on the road in support of the album. The tour was cut short after Richard Patrick entered rehabilitation, bringing that version of Filter to an abrupt end.

John 5

John 5 contributed guitar to Filter’s 2008 album Anthems for the Damned and co-wrote material for the record. His appearance came during a period when Richard Patrick rebuilt Filter after Army of Anyone, bringing outside musicians into the studio rather than relying on a fixed long-term band lineup.

Josh Freese

Josh Freese played drums on Anthems for the Damned in 2008. One of rock’s most prolific session and touring drummers, Freese supplied the album with a highly experienced rhythmic foundation during Filter’s return to recording after a six-year studio-album gap.

Charles Lee Salvaggio

Charles Lee Salvaggio served as a live bassist with Filter during the 2008 period surrounding Anthems for the Damned. His role was part of the touring and performance lineup rather than the principal studio personnel credited on the album.

During the band’s spring 2026 U.S. tour, he performed alongside Richard Patrick, Jonny Radtke, Bobby Miller, and Elias Mallin.
