Gov’t Mule’s self-titled debut was a seminal Southern rock album that marked the beginning of the band’s illustrious career. It was released on Relativity Records. The sound is characterized by the band’s jam band influences, classic rock sensibilities, and soulful blues undertones.
The album featured Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, Allen Woody on bass, and Matt Abts on drums. The album was produced by Michael Barbiero and Warren Haynes. It was recorded at Tel-Star Studios, in Bradenton, Florida, in early 1995.

Dose
Released 1998
“Dose” served as the band’s second studio album, released on Capricorn Records. It has a bit of a darker tone and features some more intricate arrangements compared to their debut. The band started to explore more into jam band territories with this release.
The band lineup remained the same: Warren Haynes, Allen Woody, and Matt Abts. The album was produced by Michael Barbiero. It was recorded at Water Music Recorders, Hoboken, New Jersey in 1997.

Life Before Insanity
Released 2000
This was Gov’t Mule’s third studio album and the last to feature original bassist Allen Woody, who passed away shortly after the album’s release. This album features guest appearances by Ben Harper and Edwin McCain.
Warren Haynes, Allen Woody, and Matt Abts were the primary musicians, with Michael Barbiero producing. It was recorded at The Theater 99 in New York City in late 1999.

The Deep End, Volume 1
Released 2001
This album was the first of a two-part series created to honor the late Allen Woody. It features an ensemble of renowned bass players, including Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, and Bootsy Collins.
The core band members were Warren Haynes and Matt Abts, joined by various guest bassists. Produced by Michael Barbiero, it was recorded at various locations throughout 2000 and 2001.

The Deep End, Volume 2
Released 2002
Following the first volume, “The Deep End, Volume 2” continued the homage to Allen Woody. Similar to its predecessor, it also featured an impressive lineup of guest bassists.
Warren Haynes and Matt Abts remained constant, with a plethora of bassists filling in. Michael Barbiero produced the album. Recorded at various locations between 2000 and 2002.

Déjà Voodoo
Released 2004
“Déjà Voodoo” was Gov’t Mule’s sixth studio album. It’s the first album to feature Andy Hess as the full-time bassist, succeeding Allen Woody. The album continues the band’s signature blend of rock, blues, and soul elements.
The band features Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, Andy Hess on bass, and Matt Abts on drums. It was produced by Michael Barbiero and Warren Haynes and recorded at various locations in 2003 and 2004.

“Mo’ Voodoo” is an EP that serves as a companion piece to “Déjà Voodoo,” featuring outtakes and different versions of some tracks.
The line-up consists of Warren Haynes, Andy Hess, and Matt Abts. Produced by Warren Haynes, it was recorded during the “Déjà Voodoo” sessions.

High & Mighty
Released 2006
“High & Mighty” was released on the band’s own label, ATO Records. It was the last to feature bassist Andy Hess. The album has a more politically charged tone and features an even wider range of musical styles.
Featuring Warren Haynes, Andy Hess, and Matt Abts, the album was produced by Gordie Johnson and Warren Haynes. It was recorded in early 2006 at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio in Spicewood, TX.

Mighty High

“Mighty High” is essentially a dub/reggae album, offering remixes of previous tracks, as well as new compositions in a different sonic style.

Released 2009
“By a Thread” was released after Gov’t Mule took a small hiatus and returned with a revitalized sound. This album was the first to feature new bassist Jorgen Carlsson. The work has a strong blues influence, with elements of rock and folk.
The band consisted of Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, Jorgen Carlsson on bass, and Matt Abts on drums. It was produced by Warren Haynes and recorded at Pedernales Studio in Spicewood, TX in early 2009.
