Hozier comes from County Wicklow in Ireland, where a love of blues, soul, folk, and gospel shaped his writing and his voice. He studied at Trinity College Dublin, sang with the choral group Anúna, and began developing his solo material before releasing the Take Me to Church EP in 2013. The turning point arrived in 2013 with the first version of his breakout single “Take Me to Church,” which he wrote, recorded, and released while still at home. The song’s video drew international attention for its human rights message, and the single’s slow build on radio and streaming put an Irish newcomer on playlists around the world.

His self-titled debut album arrived in 2014 through Rubyworks, Island, and Columbia. Recorded in Ireland and the United States with Hozier as a central creative driver, it delivered a run of singles that carried the record for years. “Take Me to Church” reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and became a global hit. Follow-up tracks such as “From Eden,” “Someone New,” “Work Song,” and “Cherry Wine” deepened his presence on radio and on stage, and the album earned multi-platinum certifications in several territories. He spent the next years touring widely and appearing at major festivals, building a reputation for a live show that fused raw vocal power with careful dynamics and a tight band.

In 2018, the Nina Cried Power EP reintroduced him with a clear statement of purpose. The title track featured Mavis Staples and honored a lineage of artists who tied soul music to social conscience. That set the tone for his second full album, Wasteland, Baby! released in 2019. The record entered at number one in both Ireland and the United States and featured “Movement,” “Almost Sweet Music,” and “Dinner and Diatribes.” The album’s sound kept faith with the deeply rooted influences that defined his debut while widening the palette with choral layers, intimate guitar work, and heavier grooves.

In 2023 he returned with Unreal Unearth, a full-length project that uses the journey in Dante’s Inferno as a loose framework. Written during a period of global uncertainty, the album explores themes of loss, change, and endurance through shifting textures and traditional forms. It continued his pattern of pairing a soulful lead voice with arrangements that move easily from quiet folk to storming blues and choir-like peaks. Tracks from the record pushed him back to the upper reaches of charts in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and the supporting tour confirmed his status as a headliner with a loyal international base.

Across these releases he has issued three studio albums along with EPs and a steady flow of singles. “Take Me to Church” earned a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year in 2015 and remains his signature breakthrough, while “Too Sweet” became his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2024. He has also collected wins and nominations from Irish and international award bodies during this run, recognition that reflects both sales and the persistent cultural reach of his songs.

Outside the studio he has tied several projects to charitable and social causes. The “Cherry Wine” single raised awareness and funds related to domestic violence. Public statements and performances have supported human rights and relief efforts, reflecting an artist who connects musical work to community work. That consistency is part of why fans stay with him. The voice is singular, the writing is grounded in real traditions, and the choices around releases and tours feel intentional rather than rushed.

The Unreal Unearth cycle continued through the 2024 EPs Unheard and Unaired, followed by the twenty-six-song deluxe collection Unreal Unearth: Unending. That expanded edition gathered the original album with “Too Sweet,” “Wildflower and Barley,” “Empire Now,” “Fare Well,” “Through Me (The Flood),” “Nobody’s Soldier,” “July,” “That You Are,” “Swan Upon Leda,” and the previously unreleased “Hymn to Virgil.” Hozier’s 2025 collaborations included “Bullseye” with Lucy Dacus, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” with Barbra Streisand, “Like Real People Do” with NATURE, and “Rubber Band Man” with Mumford & Sons. As of July 29, 2026, “Rubber Band Man,” released October 24, 2025, remained the newest release listed on his principal artist page.
