Wolfgang Van Halen launched Mammoth in Los Angeles, California, in 2015, first as a solo studio project built around writing, playing, and producing on his own terms, and later as a full-time band after Van Halen ended in 2020, following Eddie Van Halen’s death. The name connects directly to Van Halen history, since Mammoth was one of the early names used by Eddie’s band before it became Van Halen, and Wolfgang later adopted that legacy with his father’s blessing. For much of its existence, the project was billed as Mammoth WVH, then in 2025, the name was shortened to Mammoth as the third album rollout began.

The story starts well before the first album’s release, as the groundwork was already underway while Wolfgang was still playing bass in Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen publicly praised his son’s multi-instrumental ability as early as 2006, and by February 2015, Eddie confirmed Wolfgang had begun work on a solo project album. Recording took place at 5150 Studios and continued through 2017, with the debut release delayed as Wolfgang chose to spend time with his father while his health declined. In June 2019, Wolfgang appeared on his mother Valerie Bertinelli’s Food Network show and said he had finished recording the album.

The band’s first major public moment arrived with “Distance,” released November 16, 2020, a tribute written for Eddie Van Halen that became both a personal statement and a commercial breakthrough. Wolfgang later explained he began working on the song years earlier as a way of coping while his father’s health was declining. “Distance” reached number one on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart and set the template for how Mammoth would operate, a modern hard rock project centered on Wolfgang’s writing and musicianship, with an emotional core that did not rely on nostalgia to land.

The debut album, Mammoth WVH, was released June 11, 2021 on EX1, and it established the project as a charting act from the start, reaching number twelve on the Billboard 200 while also topping Billboard’s Independent Albums, Hard Rock Albums, and Rock Albums charts. Wolfgang recorded the entire album himself, framing the decision as a personal challenge and citing Dave Grohl’s early Foo Fighters approach as inspiration. As the project moved from studio to stage, a touring lineup formed with Frank Sidoris, Jonathan Jourdan, Ronnie Ficarro, and Garrett Whitlock joining for live work beginning in 2021. The band also toured in early 2022 on a co-headlining run with Dirty Honey called the Young Guns tour.

Mammoth’s single run became a defining part of its profile, with repeat number one placements on the Mainstream Rock chart. After “Distance,” the band followed with “Don’t Back Down,” which also reached number one. The second album, Mammoth II, was released on August 4, 2023, through BMG and pushed the catalog forward with singles including “Another Celebration at the End of the World” and “I’m Alright,” both of which also charted on Mainstream Rock. In February 2024, Wolfgang confirmed he had started early work on a third album, and in 2025, the project entered a new phase with “The End,” released May 1, 2025, a single that returned the band to number one on Mainstream Rock and introduced the era that would also include “The Spell,” another Mainstream Rock number one.

That third album, The End, was announced July 9, 2025, and released October 24, 2025, on BMG, with the name change to Mammoth tied directly to the same release cycle. The group also announced The End Tour with Myles Kennedy as a supporting act, keeping the band active on the road while continuing a release strategy built around rock radio performance and fast follow-up singles. The music video credits on this era reinforced the project’s visibility, with Robert Rodriguez and Greg Nicotero listed as directors for “The End,” a notable pairing for a modern rock video.
