Mt. Joy emerged from a chance reunion between two musicians who discovered they had relocated to the same city, resulting in the formation of an indie rock band that has released four studio albums since 2016. The band, comprised of five members, originated in the Philadelphia area and established itself in Los Angeles, achieving chart success with their debut album reaching number 152 on the Billboard 200 and their second album, Rearrange Us, reaching number 197. The group has performed at major festivals including Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, and Lollapalooza, and opened for established acts such as the Head and the Heart, the Shins, Whitney, the Revivalists, and the Lumineers throughout their career.
Mt. Joy signed to Dualtone Records in 2017 and has maintained consistent band membership since the addition of drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos and keyboardist Jackie Miclau that same year. The band released their third album, Orange Blood, in 2022, recorded at Headroom Studios in Philadelphia. In May 2025, the band released their fourth studio album, Hope We Have Fun, which debuted at number 160 on the Billboard 200 and number 77 on the UK Albums Chart. The album featured collaborations with artists Gigi Perez and Nathaniel Rateliff on specific tracks.
Mt. Joy has contributed to charitable causes throughout their career, donating all first-week proceeds from Rearrange Us to Campaign Zero, a nonprofit focused on reducing police violence, and later hosting an Instagram Live stream that raised over thirty thousand dollars for Music Cares and Philabundance. The band serves as an ambassador for HeadCount, a nonpartisan voter registration organization. The song “Silver Lining” from their debut album reached number two on the Billboard Triple A chart and achieved gold certification from the RIAA.
Matt Quinn
Matt Quinn co-founded Mt. Joy in 2016 and has served as the band’s lead vocalist and primary guitarist since its inception. Quinn first met bandmate Sam Cooper at Conestoga High School outside Philadelphia, and the two reconnected in Los Angeles in 2016, which led directly to the creation of Mt. Joy. Quinn performs lead vocals, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar, and ukulele for the band. He sang and played on all four Mt. Joy studio albums: Mt. Joy, Rearrange Us, Orange Blood, and Hope We Have Fun. His vocal performance on “Silver Lining” contributed significantly to the song’s success on the Billboard Triple A charts, where it reached number two. Before focusing on Mt. Joy, Quinn attended law school but ultimately chose to pursue his music career with the band. Quinn is credited as a writer on the track “Santa Drives an Astrovan” from the 2024 charity album A Philly Special Christmas Party alongside Sam Cooper.
Sam Cooper
Sam Cooper joined Matt Quinn as a co-founder of Mt. Joy in 2016, having previously collaborated with Quinn during their high school years at Conestoga High School near Philadelphia. Cooper played lead guitar and provided backing vocals on the debut single “Astrovan,” recorded in April 2016 with producer Caleb Nelson and bassist Michael Byrnes. Cooper appeared on all four Mt. Joy albums, contributing lead guitar work throughout each release from Mt. Joy through Hope We Have Fun. Along with Matt Quinn, Cooper is credited as a writer on “Santa Drives an Astrovan” from A Philly Special Christmas Party. The streaming success of “Astrovan” and the subsequent single “Sheep” contributed to the band’s growth, leading to the addition of drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos and keyboardist Jackie Miclau in 2017.
Michael Byrnes
Michael Byrnes joined Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper to record their debut single “Astrovan” in April 2016, after being connected to the band through a Craigslist advertisement. Byrnes served as bassist and backing vocalist for the band from 2016 onward and appeared on all four Mt. Joy studio albums. His bass work provided foundational support across Mt. Joy, Rearrange Us, Orange Blood, and Hope We Have Fun. At the time of the “Astrovan” recording, Byrnes was living with producer Caleb Nelson, who helped facilitate the initial recording session. Byrnes has remained with Mt. Joy as the band expanded to five members and progressed through their whole discography.
Sotiris Eliopoulos
Sotiris Eliopoulos joined Mt. Joy in 2017 as the band’s drummer and percussionist after the streaming success of their initial singles “Astrovan” and “Sheep.” Eliopoulos provides drums, percussion, and backing vocals for the band. He first performed with Mt. Joy at major festivals including Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, and Lollapalooza. He appeared on three Mt. Joy studio albums: Rearrange Us, Orange Blood, and Hope We Have Fun, having not participated in the 2018 debut album Mt. Joy. Eliopoulos contributed to the band’s live performances touring as a support act for the Lumineers in early 2020, before that tour was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. His drumming has been integral to Mt. Joy’s sound throughout their latter three album releases and ongoing performances.
Jackie Miclau
Jackie Miclau joined Mt. Joy in 2017 as the band’s keyboardist and pianist, helping expand the group from a three-piece to a five-piece ensemble. Miclau performs keyboards, piano, and backing vocals for the band. Like Sotiris Eliopoulos, Miclau first performed with Mt. Joy at major festivals in 2017 and appeared on the three most recent Mt. Joy studio albums: Rearrange Us, Orange Blood, and Hope We Have Fun. Miclau has been part of the band’s touring schedule, including opening performances for established acts such as the Head and the Heart, the Shins, Whitney, and the Revivalists. Miclau’s keyboard arrangements have contributed to the band’s production from their second album forward.
