Night Ranger’s roots go back to San Francisco, California, in 1979, when Jack Blades, Brad Gillis, and Kelly Keagy began a new band after their time in Rubicon. The group initially performed under the name Stereo, expanded with keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald and guitarist Jeff Watson, and then became Ranger before adopting the name Night Ranger prior to the release of Dawn Patrol in 1982. Over the years, the band has released a substantial catalog of studio albums and undergone numerous lineup changes, with current and former members contributing significantly to their success. Night Ranger’s music has often charted on the Billboard charts, with hits like “Sister Christian” and “(You Can Still) Rock in America” becoming staples of 1980s rock. The band’s longevity and impact on rock music have been marked by a breakup and reunion, yet their influence and catalog of music remain enduring. The current lineup consists of Jack Blades, Brad Gillis, Kelly Keagy, Eric Levy, and Keri Kelli.

Jack Blades

Jack Blades, the bassist and co-lead vocalist, co-founded the band that became Night Ranger in 1979. He was a member through the band’s original run, leaving in 1989 to form the supergroup Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent and Tommy Shaw. Blades returned to Night Ranger in 1996 and remains a current member. He has contributed to nearly all of the band’s studio albums, with the exception of Feeding off the Mojo (1995), which was recorded during his absence. Blades is known for his songwriting skills, having written or co-written many of the band’s biggest songs, including “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” and “(You Can Still) Rock in America,” the latter co-written with Brad Gillis. “Sister Christian,” however, was written by Kelly Keagy. Outside of Night Ranger, Blades has released solo albums and collaborated with artists across various genres, including his Shaw-Blades partnership with Tommy Shaw.

Brad Gillis

Brad Gillis, the lead and rhythm guitarist, co-founded the band that became Night Ranger and remains a current member. Gillis’s guitar work is a defining element of the band’s sound, and he has played on every Night Ranger studio album. His notable contributions include the soaring guitar solo on “Sister Christian” and his overall guitar work that blends melodic rock with virtuosic solos. Gillis gained additional fame as a temporary guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne after the death of Randy Rhoads and appeared on the live album Speak of the Devil (1982). He has also worked as a session musician and released solo material.

Kelly Keagy

Kelly Keagy, the drummer and co-lead vocalist, was part of the band’s formation and remains a current member. Keagy’s vocals on “Sister Christian” brought the band one of its biggest hits, and he also wrote the song. His drumming and vocal harmonies are key components of the band’s sound, and he has contributed to every Night Ranger studio album. Keagy has also pursued solo projects, releasing albums such as Time Passes and I’m Alive, and collaborated with other musicians, including on the album Project: Driver with Tony MacAlpine, Rudy Sarzo, and Tommy Aldridge.

Jeff Watson

Jeff Watson joined the early Night Ranger lineup in 1980 as a lead and rhythm guitarist and remained with the band through its original run until 1989. He returned for the reunion era from 1996 to 2007. Watson’s eight-finger tapping technique on the guitar is one of his signature styles, and he contributed significantly to the band’s early success. He played on albums such as Dawn Patrol, Midnight Madness, 7 Wishes, Big Life, Man in Motion, Neverland, Seven, and Hole in the Sun. After leaving the band, Watson continued his music career with solo projects, including Lone Ranger and Around the Sun.

Alan Fitzgerald

Alan Fitzgerald joined the early Night Ranger lineup in 1980 as keyboardist and remained through 1988. He returned for the reunion period from 1996 to 2003. Fitzgerald’s keyboard work helped define the band’s sound, particularly on tracks like “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” and “When You Close Your Eyes.” He played on the band’s first four studio albums and later returned for Neverland (1997) and Seven (1998). After his time with Night Ranger, Fitzgerald also worked as a touring and offstage keyboardist with major rock acts, including Van Halen.

Jesse Bradman

Jesse Bradman joined Night Ranger as a keyboardist and backing vocalist after Alan Fitzgerald’s departure in 1988. He contributed keyboards and backing vocals during the Man in Motion era and toured with the band through the end of its original run in 1989.

Gary Moon

Gary Moon was the bassist and lead vocalist for Night Ranger during the band’s early-1990s revival. He worked with Brad Gillis and Kelly Keagy in the lineup that recorded Feeding off the Mojo (1995). Moon’s tenure was marked by his dual role as vocalist and bassist during a unique period in the band’s history. After leaving Night Ranger, Moon continued his music career with various projects and collaborations, including work with Three Dog Night.

David Zajicek

David Zajicek joined Night Ranger’s early-1990s lineup as a guitarist and keyboardist. He toured with Brad Gillis, Kelly Keagy, and Gary Moon and contributed guitar and keyboard parts to Feeding off the Mojo (1995). His tenure ended as the classic lineup reunited in 1996.

Michael Lardie

Michael Lardie, known primarily for his work with Great White, joined Night Ranger in 2003 after Alan Fitzgerald left the band. Lardie served as a keyboardist and backing vocalist and contributed to Hole in the Sun, including songwriting and keyboard work. He remained with Night Ranger until 2007 before returning his focus to Great White and other projects.

Reb Beach

Reb Beach, best known for his work with Winger and Whitesnake, played guitar with Night Ranger during the 2007-2008 transition following Jeff Watson’s departure. Beach toured with the band before returning to his other commitments, and Joel Hoekstra subsequently took over the second-guitar position.

Christian Matthew Cullen

Christian Matthew Cullen joined Night Ranger as keyboardist during the late 2000s after Michael Lardie’s departure. He performed with the group until 2011, when Eric Levy took over the keyboard position.

Joel Hoekstra

Joel Hoekstra joined Night Ranger as a guitarist in 2008 and played with the band until 2014. Hoekstra’s tenure included the studio albums Somewhere in California (2011) and High Road (2014). His guitar work added a modern edge to the band’s classic sound. Hoekstra left Night Ranger to join Whitesnake. He has also played with Trans-Siberian Orchestra and released solo albums including Dying to Live.

Eric Levy

Eric Levy joined Night Ranger as the keyboardist in 2011 and remains with the band. His contributions include playing on albums such as Somewhere in California, High Road, Don’t Let Up (2017), and ATBPO (2021). Levy’s keyboard work has helped maintain the band’s signature sound while also allowing for new musical explorations. Outside of Night Ranger, Levy has been involved in various musical projects and collaborations, including performing with Garaj Mahal.

Keri Kelli

Keri Kelli began making touring appearances with Night Ranger before becoming a full-time member in 2014, replacing Joel Hoekstra. He remains one of the band’s current guitarists and has played on albums including Don’t Let Up (2017) and ATBPO (2021). Kelli brings a wealth of experience from his work with other bands and artists, including Alice Cooper and Slash’s Snakepit.
