Farmville, Virginia, sits at the center of Oliver Anthony’s story, not only as his hometown but as the setting that shaped both his identity and his music. Born Christopher Anthony Lunsford on June 30, 1992, he was raised in the Piedmont region of Virginia and later adopted the professional name Oliver Anthony in tribute to his grandfather and to the Depression era in which he lived. Before music changed his life, Anthony worked industrial jobs in North Carolina and Virginia, and after leaving high school in 2010 at age 17, he later earned a GED. A serious work accident at a paper mill in North Carolina in 2013 fractured his skull and left him unable to work for half a year. From 2014 through 2023 he worked in outside sales in manufacturing, visiting factories and job sites, a background that gave his songwriting a direct connection to working class life rather than a polished music business narrative.

His actual start in music came much later than many artists. Anthony began writing songs in 2021 and, beginning in 2022, started releasing music under the name Oliver Anthony Music. He built his reputation outside the traditional industry system, recording his early songs on his mobile phone and leaning into a country folk style influenced by Hank Williams. He has said that messages from listeners telling him the songs were helping them through their own struggles gave him a sense of purpose. That connection mattered because Anthony had been dealing with mental health problems and alcohol abuse for five years, and those personal struggles became part of the emotional weight that listeners heard in the music.

Everything changed in August 2023 when “Rich Men North of Richmond” exploded online. After the West Virginia music channel Radiowv invited him to record a song for its YouTube channel, the resulting performance went viral almost immediately. The single debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Anthony the first artist ever to enter at the top of that chart without any prior chart history in any form. The song also shot to Number 1 on the United States iTunes all genres chart, Number 1 on the Spotify United States chart, and Number 1 on Apple Music. Its rapid spread pushed him from relative obscurity into the center of the national conversation, and within the same month six additional songs by Anthony landed in the iTunes top 20, with five of them in the top 10.

His biggest songs beyond “Rich Men North of Richmond” include “Aint Gotta Dollar,” which reached Number 1 on Spotify’s Viral 50 list and Number 2 on iTunes, and “I’ve Got to Get Sober,” which rose to Number 3 on Apple’s platform. “I Want to Go Home” also drew immediate attention, passing one million views in 24 hours after its YouTube release on August 22, 2023. “90 Some Chevy,” first released earlier and later issued with a new video and live recording, also drew strong viewership. Anthony added another chart milestone when he became the first male songwriter to place 13 songs simultaneously in the top 50 of Digital Song Sales while still alive. Despite that success, industry observers noted that much of it happened with virtually no radio support at first, making his rise even more unusual.

The formal recording catalog remains small but significant. Anthony released his debut studio album, Hymnal of a Troubled Man’s Mind, on March 31, 2024. That gives him one studio album to date. Even before the album arrived, record labels were pursuing him aggressively, and he publicly stated that he was turning away offers reported to be worth 8 million dollars because he did not want six tour buses, 15 tractor-trailers, a jet, stadium shows, or the spotlight that typically comes with major industry deals. He and his team instead moved carefully, booking shows and maintaining an independent approach. That independence has become one of the defining features of his career, and for many listeners, it is part of why he has connected so strongly, because the music has been presented as personal, direct, and largely untouched by conventional commercial machinery.

Beyond the music itself, Anthony’s life has drawn attention for the way he has chosen to live and the public platforms he has stepped onto. As of August 2023, he was living with his family in a 750-square-foot camper on an off-grid 90-acre property, where he said he intended to raise livestock. He later divorced and wrote a song about that experience. In 2025, he was also pictured speaking at the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship in London, showing that his profile had expanded beyond performance into broader public discussion.

He has described himself as politically nonpartisan and publicly pushed back against efforts by both the right and the left to claim or define him. Oliver Anthony is loved because his songs reached listeners with unusual force, his voice carries a rough sincerity that cuts through quickly, and his sudden rise felt rooted in lived experience rather than industry planning. With one album released, a historic Number 1 single in “Rich Men North of Richmond,” and multiple major digital milestones already behind him, he established a national presence in a remarkably short time.
