What began as the remnants of guitarist Scott Holiday’s previous musical projects quickly evolved into a formidable rock outfit that would go on to release eight studio albums, captivate audiences worldwide, and earn multiple Grammy nominations. The band’s formation represents a perfect storm of musical talent, with vocalist Jay Buchanan initially skeptical about joining a rock band before fully committing after seeing the enthusiastic reception to their 2009 debut album “Before the Fire.” From humble beginnings playing cover songs in local bars, Rival Sons rapidly ascended through the ranks of the rock world, signing with Earache Records in 2010 before eventually finding their home with Atlantic Records via Dave Cobb’s Low Country Sound imprint.
Their sonic journey has been meticulously documented across albums like “Pressure & Time” (2011), “Head Down” (2012), “Great Western Valkyrie” (2014), “Hollow Bones” (2016), “Feral Roots” (2019), and their most recent companion albums “Darkfighter” and “Lightbringer” (both 2023). The band’s commitment to an organic recording process, often completing albums in just weeks with longtime producer Dave Cobb, has become a hallmark of their authentic sound. This approach earned them the attention of rock royalty, including opening slots for acts like AC/DC, Alice Cooper, and perhaps most notably, serving as the exclusive support act for Black Sabbath’s farewell “The End” tour. Their 2019 album “Feral Roots” marked a career high point, earning nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Performance (“Too Bad”) at the 2020 Grammy Awards, while their single “Do Your Worst” reached number one on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart.
Throughout their evolution, Rival Sons have maintained a core lineup of Jay Buchanan (vocals), Scott Holiday (guitar), and Michael Miley (drums), with Dave Beste replacing original bassist Robin Everhart in 2013. Their touring configuration has expanded to include keyboard players, with Todd Ögren (who departed in 2023) and more recently Jesse Nason enhancing their live sound. The band’s unwavering dedication to their craft, combined with their reverence for rock’s past and commitment to pushing the genre forward, has established Rival Sons as one of the most significant rock bands to emerge in the 21st century. Their journey continues to unfold with extensive touring, including dedicated shows celebrating milestone anniversaries of their earlier albums, demonstrating both their longevity and the enduring power of their musical catalog.
Jay Buchanan
Jay Buchanan, born July 6, 1975, in San Bernardino, California, is the dynamic lead vocalist and occasional guitarist of Rival Sons. Before joining the band, Buchanan had established himself as a solo artist and frontman of his own band, BUCHANAN. He independently released his debut album “All Understood” in 2004 and the “True Love EP” in 2006, building a reputation as a soulful singer-songwriter with folk and blues influences. Initially skeptical about joining a rock band, Buchanan was discovered by Scott Holiday on MySpace in 2006, though it took some convincing for him to commit fully to Rival Sons. After seeing the positive reception to the band’s debut album “Before the Fire” (2009), he dedicated himself completely to the project, bringing his powerful, emotive vocals to the forefront of their sound.
Buchanan’s exceptional vocal range and intensity have become defining characteristics of Rival Sons’ music, drawing comparisons to legendary rock vocalists while maintaining his distinctive style. He has contributed to all of the band’s releases, from their debut through to their most recent albums “Darkfighter” and “Lightbringer” (2023). As a songwriter, Buchanan infuses personal experiences and storytelling into Rival Sons’ lyrics, creating depth and authenticity that resonates with listeners. His stage presence is equally compelling, often described as trance-like or meditative, fully immersed in the emotional delivery of each performance. In interviews, Buchanan has cited diverse influences including blues legends, soul singers, and folk artists that inform his vocal approach.
Beyond his work with Rival Sons, Buchanan has maintained occasional solo endeavors, including recording the album “Locust & Wild Honey” in 2007. He has also collaborated with various musicians throughout his career, demonstrating versatility across different genres. Buchanan’s journey from solo artist to frontman of an internationally successful rock band represents a significant artistic evolution, one that has seen him grow from a reluctant participant in the rock world to one of the genre’s most respected contemporary vocalists. His contribution to Rival Sons’ sound is immeasurable, providing the emotional core and powerful delivery that has helped distinguish the band in modern rock. In recent years, Buchanan has also taken on additional production responsibilities, co-producing some of the band’s work alongside Scott Holiday.
Scott Holiday
Scott Holiday is the visionary guitarist and founding member of Rival Sons, bringing his distinctive playing style and vintage-inspired sound to the band since its formation. Before creating Rival Sons, Holiday was active in several musical projects, including the band humanLab, which was signed to Atlantic Records. After leaving that group, he formed Black Summer Crush around 2005 with Michael Miley, Robin Everhart, and vocalist Thomas Flowers (of Oleander). When seeking a new direction, Holiday discovered Jay Buchanan on MySpace in 2006 and, recognizing his extraordinary vocal talent, convinced him to join the project that would become Rival Sons. The band’s original incarnation took shape when Buchanan re-recorded vocals over tracks that had been recorded by Black Summer Crush, eventually released as Rival Sons’ debut album “Before the Fire” in 2009.
Holiday’s guitar work is characterized by his masterful blend of blues-based riffs, psychedelic textures, and a tone that harkens back to rock’s golden era while remaining distinctly modern. His playing features prominently on all Rival Sons releases, from their debut through “Pressure & Time” (2011), “Head Down” (2012), “Great Western Valkyrie” (2014), “Hollow Bones” (2016), “Feral Roots” (2019), and their most recent companion albums “Darkfighter” and “Lightbringer” (both 2023). Beyond his instrumental contributions, Holiday has been a key creative force in the band’s songwriting and production, often collaborating with producer Dave Cobb and becoming increasingly involved in production aspects of their recordings. He has championed the band’s approach to creating albums quickly and organically, famously describing their process by saying rock and roll “needs to be a knife fight, not a knife dance.”
As one of the band’s most visible members, Holiday is recognizable for his distinctive style, often sporting tailored suits, his signature mustache, and sunglasses. He has developed relationships with various guitar and equipment manufacturers, known particularly for his love of custom guitars and his preference for adding Bigsby vibrato systems to nearly all his instruments. His passion for vintage and custom gear has helped shape Rival Sons’ authentic sound. Throughout the band’s evolution, Holiday has remained a steady creative presence, helping guide their artistic direction while maintaining their connection to rock’s rich heritage. His partnership with Jay Buchanan has formed the creative nucleus of Rival Sons, steering their sound through various explorations while keeping their foundation firmly rooted in powerful, blues-based rock and roll.
Michael Miley
Michael Miley, born August 23 in Long Beach, California, is the propulsive force behind Rival Sons’ rhythm section, serving as the band’s drummer since its formation. Prior to joining Rival Sons, Miley had already established himself as an accomplished drummer with an impressive resume. He performed with alternative rock band Veruca Salt and was part of the house band for NBC’s “Last Call with Carson Daly” for several years. Miley’s connection to Rival Sons began in 2005 when he met guitarist Scott Holiday through a mutual acquaintance, leading to their decision to form a band together. His previous working relationship with Jay Buchanan proved invaluable, as he had played drums in Buchanan’s solo band around 2002, creating a pre-existing chemistry that would benefit Rival Sons.
Miley’s drumming style, which draws influence from legendary players like John Bonham, Keith Moon, and Jeff Porcaro, has been integral to Rival Sons’ sound across all their albums. His powerful, dynamic approach combines technical proficiency with raw energy, providing the perfect foundation for the band’s blues-rock compositions. On recordings from “Before the Fire” (2009) through “Pressure & Time” (2011), “Head Down” (2012), “Great Western Valkyrie” (2014), “Hollow Bones” (2016), “Feral Roots” (2019), and their recent companion albums “Darkfighter” and “Lightbringer” (2023), Miley’s distinctive drumming is a defining element of the band’s sonic identity. His contributions extend beyond percussion, as he has been involved in the band’s songwriting process throughout their career.
Outside of Rival Sons, Miley’s extensive musical experience includes performing and recording with an impressive roster of artists including Kelly Clarkson, Santana, Ricky Martin, and Mickey Hart, demonstrating his versatility across different genres. His technical abilities have earned him recognition in the drumming community, while his steady presence has been a constant through Rival Sons’ evolving lineup. Miley’s approach to recording, like the rest of the band, embraces spontaneity and live energy, often completing album sessions in remarkably short timeframes with minimal overdubs. This commitment to authenticity aligns perfectly with the band’s ethos and contributes significantly to their distinctive sound. Throughout Rival Sons’ rise from local favorites to internationally acclaimed rock act, Miley’s powerful drumming has remained at the heart of their musical identity.
Dave Beste
Dave Beste joined Rival Sons as bassist in 2013, stepping in to replace original member Robin Everhart who departed after citing the challenges of extensive touring. Beste, who had previously performed with Rocco DeLuca and the Burden, was initially brought in as a temporary replacement for Rival Sons’ tour supporting Sammy Hagar in August 2013. His immediate chemistry with the band led to him being officially announced as a permanent member in March 2014, with frontman Jay Buchanan praising his natural fit and contributions to their sound. Beste made his recording debut with Rival Sons on their fourth album “Great Western Valkyrie” (2014), which Buchanan specifically highlighted as showcasing Beste’s impressive playing abilities.
Since joining, Beste has become an integral part of Rival Sons’ lineup, providing the rhythmic foundation for their subsequent albums including “Hollow Bones” (2016), “Feral Roots” (2019), and their recent companion albums “Darkfighter” and “Lightbringer” (2023). His seamless integration into the band allowed them to maintain their momentum during what could have been a challenging transition period. Beste’s solid, groove-oriented bass playing complements Michael Miley’s drumming perfectly, creating a cohesive rhythm section that anchors the band’s sound while allowing Scott Holiday’s guitar work and Jay Buchanan’s vocals to soar above.
Beyond his musical contributions, Beste has been part of Rival Sons’ extensive touring schedule, performing at venues and festivals worldwide, including their prestigious stint as the exclusive opening act for Black Sabbath’s farewell tour. He has also participated in the band’s television appearances, including their performance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” shortly after joining the group. Beste’s longstanding friendship with members of the band prior to joining facilitated a smooth transition during a pivotal moment in their career, allowing Rival Sons to continue their artistic evolution without losing momentum. His decade-long tenure with the band has now exceeded that of his predecessor, making him a well-established member of the Rival Sons family.
Robin Everhart
Robin Everhart served as Rival Sons’ original bassist from the band’s formation in 2009 until his departure in August 2013. Before joining Rival Sons, Everhart crossed paths with drummer Michael Miley at a Hurricane Katrina benefit concert organized by Isaac Hayes in Long Beach, California. This meeting led to his introduction to guitarist Scott Holiday, forming the rhythm section that would become the foundation of Rival Sons’ early sound. Everhart’s bass work can be heard on the band’s first three albums: “Before the Fire” (2009), “Pressure & Time” (2011), and “Head Down” (2012), as well as on their self-titled EP (2010). His playing contributed significantly to the band’s early identity, providing a solid rhythmic counterpart to Miley’s drums and a foundation for Holiday’s guitar work.
During his tenure with Rival Sons, Everhart participated in the band’s rise from local acclaim to international recognition. He toured extensively with the group, supporting acts like AC/DC and Alice Cooper, and performing at major festivals across the United States and Europe. Everhart was part of Rival Sons during their signing to Earache Records in 2010, a pivotal moment in their career that led to wider distribution and recognition. His final album with the band, “Head Down” (2012), saw Rival Sons expanding their sound and audience, charting in multiple European countries and receiving critical acclaim.
In August 2013, Everhart announced his departure from Rival Sons, explaining that after years of intensive touring, he had concluded that he was “not a road warrior” and that the “rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle” was not for him. The split was described as amicable by both parties, with the band wishing him well as they moved forward. While his time with Rival Sons ended after four years, Everhart’s contributions to their foundational sound and early success remain an important part of their history. He was replaced by Dave Beste, who initially filled in for their 2013 tour supporting Sammy Hagar before becoming a permanent member in 2014. Everhart’s legacy lives on in the recordings that helped establish Rival Sons as a formidable force in modern rock.
Todd Ögren
Todd Ögren (sometimes credited as Todd Ögren-Brooks) served as Rival Sons’ touring keyboard player from 2014 until his departure in May 2023. Ögren, whose surname is of Swedish origin meaning “Ocean Branch,” joined the band as they were promoting their fourth album “Great Western Valkyrie.” His first television appearance with the group was on the French program “Le Grand Journal” (Canal+), where he was introduced to audiences as the band’s first-ever touring keyboard player. Ögren quickly became known as “The Fifth Son” among fans and band members, though he maintained touring member status rather than becoming an official band member. His keyboard contributions enhanced Rival Sons’ live sound, adding depth and texture to their performances while faithfully reproducing studio elements that had previously been absent from their concerts.
During his nine-year tenure with Rival Sons, Ögren performed on numerous tours and at festivals worldwide, including the band’s prestigious run as the exclusive opening act for Black Sabbath’s farewell “The End” tour in 2016-2017. His keyboard work can be heard on three studio albums: “Hollow Bones” (2016), “Feral Roots” (2019), and “Darkfighter” (2023). Beyond performing, Ögren participated in writing sessions with the band, contributing to their creative process while maintaining a lower public profile than the core members. In an interview, he revealed his background as a musician since age eight, having operated a recording studio near Philadelphia before moving to Los Angeles in 2004, and later to New York City, where he worked in production for various venues while maintaining his career as a session musician.
On May 23, 2023, it was announced that Ögren was leaving Rival Sons for personal reasons, marking the end of his association with the band shortly before the release of their seventh album “Darkfighter.” His departure necessitated adjustments to the band’s live performances, including transpositions of certain songs and the use of substitute instruments for tracks where his keyboard parts were integral. Ögren’s contributions to Rival Sons over nearly a decade helped expand their sonic palette both in the studio and on stage, allowing for more faithful live renditions of their increasingly complex arrangements. His time with the band coincided with some of their most successful years, including their Grammy nominations for “Feral Roots.”
Jesse Nason
Jesse Nason is the most recent addition to Rival Sons’ touring lineup, joining as keyboard player in October 2023 during the European leg of the band’s “Darkfighter” tour. Nason stepped into the role following the departure of longtime touring keyboardist Todd Ögren, who had left the band in May 2023 citing personal reasons. Nason’s introduction to Rival Sons’ fans came as the band was promoting their companion albums “Darkfighter” and “Lightbringer,” both released in 2023. His keyboard contributions helped maintain the textural elements and atmospheric qualities that had become increasingly important to the band’s evolving sound, particularly on these more sonically adventurous recent albums.
Unlike his predecessor, Nason’s tenure with Rival Sons has been relatively brief and intermittent. According to reports, he did not continue with the band following the initial European tour where he was introduced. This suggests a more flexible arrangement rather than the more permanent touring role that Ögren had maintained for nearly a decade. The limited information available about Nason’s background and prior musical experience reflects his recent association with the band and his limited public exposure in this role. While Nason has not yet appeared on any Rival Sons recordings, his live performances helped the band navigate the transition period following Ögren’s departure.
Nason’s brief association with Rival Sons coincided with a period of significant change for the band, as they were not only adjusting to a lineup alteration but also introducing material from their newest albums that featured some of their most ambitious compositions to date. While his time with the band appears to have been limited to specific tour dates rather than becoming a long-term arrangement, Nason helped Rival Sons maintain the full sound of their studio work in the live setting during a transitional period. The band has since continued touring, including their “Head Down” anniversary tour in Europe in 2024, though it’s unclear if Nason has participated in these more recent performances or if keyboard duties have been handled differently.
