In the neon-lit landscape of the 1980s, amidst the burgeoning MTV culture and the explosive rise of rock and pop, one band stood out with their compelling blend of infectious melodies and rock prowess: Scandal. Led by the charismatic Patty Smyth, born in New York City, Scandal burst onto the music scene, encapsulating the era’s vibrant energy and raw emotion.

Scandal’s significance in the music industry cannot be overstated. With their debut EP in 1982 and their groundbreaking album “Warrior” in 1984, they scored platinum hits and etched their name into the annals of rock history. The song “The Warrior” became a cultural touchstone, symbolic of the decade’s spirit, peaking at No. 7 and securing a spot in Billboard’s Top 50 songs for the year.

Scandal released one full-length studio album, “Warrior,” one EP, and a handful of compilations.

In the early 1980s, this band seemed to come out of nowhere. MTV was still in its early stages when they started playing the video for the song “Goodbye To You.” I was around 18 or 19 at the time and was entirely captivated by the song and the persona of Patty Smyth in the video. I was not alone. It was a low budget video, but it didn’t matter beccuse the song was just so good and Patty’s look and vocals were spellbinding. I don’t ever think the band was ever expecting the success they had with the song. Every bard band in New York started putting the song in their sets, including mine.  So many people went out and brouth the vinykl EP as the CD era had not yet taken hold. Every song on the EP was fantastic.

  2. “Love’s Got a Line on You”

Warrior (1984)

The Warrior was Scandal’s long-awaited debut album. With the massive success of “Goodbye To You” and their 5 song EP, fans couldn’t wait to get their hands on Scandal’s first full-length LP. 1984 was a competitive year in the music business with albums like Purple Rain, Born In The U.S.A., and Like a Virgin dominating the charts. However the band had the power of Columbia Records behind them making sure everyone would hear Scandal’s The Warrior. Hear it they did as the album broke into the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 200 albums charts, making their debut LP a huge success. With big-time producer Mike Chapman being brought on board, The Warrior featured a much more polished sound. It’s success would help fuel the start of Patty Smyth’s solo career as in the end, the lure of Scandal was all about Patty.
