The musical heritage of Southern rock found new life through bloodlines and brotherhood when three sons of Allman Brothers Band founders united in 2018. The Allman Betts Band was formed in November 2018, and includes the sons of three founding members of the Allman Brothers Band – Devon Allman (son of Gregg Allman), Duane Betts (son of Dickey Betts), and Berry Duane Oakley (son of Berry Oakley). The band has released two critically-acclaimed studio albums: Down to the River (2019) and Bless Your Heart (2020).

Down to the River was released in June 2019, and when it entered the rock charts at #1, it was obvious that these talented progeny were more than ready to bring their original repertoire to generations of fans. The album was recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, establishing the band’s commitment to authentic analog recording techniques. Their second album, Bless Your Heart, was released on August 28, 2020, also recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio with producer Matt Ross-Spang.

On January 25, 2022, the band announced they would be taking a break from recording and touring to work on solo material. They reunited to play at Norfolk Harborfest on June 9, 2023, and returned to touring in May and June 2024 with their “King Crawler” American tour. By the summer of 2023, The Allman Betts Band had returned to the road with an expanded lineup that now includes guitarist Johnny Stachela, bassist Justin Corgan, keyboardist John Ginty, percussionist/saxophonist David Gomez, and drummers John Lum and Alex Orbison.

Devon Allman

Devon Allman was born on August 10, 1972, and is an American guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and record producer. He is the son of musician and singer-songwriter Gregg Allman. Devon has been with the Allman Betts Band since its formation in November 2018 and remains an active member today. He serves as co-leader alongside Duane Betts, contributing guitar work and lead vocals to both studio albums.

Devon’s musical journey began long before the Allman Betts Band formation. In the early 1990s, Devon Allman headed up a band in St. Louis called The Dark Horses. He formed Honeytribe in 1999, which broke up in 2001 so Allman could spend time with his newly born son, before re-forming in 2005. Honeytribe recorded two albums: Torch in 2006 and Space Age Blues in 2010, playing up to 300 shows a year across 42 states and ten countries.

In October 2011, Allman began working on the Royal Southern Brotherhood project, a blues-rock supergroup that included Cyril Neville, Mike Zito, Grammy-award winning drummer Yonrico Scott and bassist Charlie Wooton. In 2013, Allman launched his solo career as the Devon Allman Band, releasing his first solo album titled Turquoise, which was recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee.

On both Allman Betts Band albums, Devon contributed significantly as both guitarist and vocalist. He co-wrote multiple songs with Duane Betts and served as lead vocalist on most tracks. During the band’s hiatus period, Devon toured the country with Donavon Frankenreiter, setting a new world record for playing 50 shows across all 50 states in 49 days.

Duane Betts

Duane Betts was born on April 16, 1978, and is an American guitarist and singer-songwriter. He is the son of Allman Brothers Band member and co-founder Dickey Betts. Duane has been with the Allman Betts Band since its formation in November 2018 and continues as an active member today. He serves as co-leader with Devon Allman, contributing guitar work and vocals to both studio albums.

Duane was named for Duane Allman, Dickey’s bandmate who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1971. Betts learned to play drums as a youth, then switched to guitar at age 12. In 2005, his father asked Betts to join Great Southern, formed in the wake of Dickey’s departure from The Allman Brothers Band in 2000. Betts toured both nationally and internationally with Great Southern, appearing on the CD/DVD Dickey Betts & Great Southern: Rockpalast 30 Years of Southern Rock 1978–2008.

Betts officially became a touring member of folk-rock band Dawes in May 2015, performing with the band for the entire touring cycle of their 2015 album, All Your Favorite Bands, including appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, the Bonnaroo Festival, and Lollapalooza Berlin. Betts released his debut EP, Sketches of American Music, on April 26, 2018, produced by Steve Cropper and Marc Ford.

On the Allman Betts Band albums, Duane contributed guitar work, vocals, and songwriting. His instrumental composition “Savannah’s Dream” on Bless Your Heart stands as a centerpiece track showcasing the band’s jamming abilities. During the band’s hiatus, Duane recorded and released Wild & Precious Life — his full-length debut as a solo artist, released on July 14, 2023.

Berry Duane Oakley

Berry Duane Oakley is the son of Berry Oakley, founding bassist of the Allman Brothers Band. Berry joined the Allman Betts Band at its formation in November 2018 and remained with the group through both studio albums on bass guitar. On the second album Bless Your Heart, Berry made his ABB vocal debut on his original song “The Doctor’s Daughter.”

Berry’s musical friendship with Devon and Duane traces back to The Allman Brothers Band’s 20th anniversary summer tour in 1989 when the three first met, often sitting-in with the Rock-And-Roll Hall of Fame inductees as teenage descendants rightfully joining a rock-and-roll legacy. The bassist provided the crucial low-end foundation for both Down to the River and Bless Your Heart albums, recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios.

Berry Duane Oakley remained with the band through their 2022 hiatus. However, when the band returned in 2023 with an expanded lineup, Justin Corgan had taken over the bass position, with Berry no longer listed among the current touring members. Berry’s tenure with the band lasted from November 2018 through early 2022, spanning both studio albums and extensive touring.

Johnny Stachela

Johnny Stachela is a slide guitarist and vocalist who joined the Allman Betts Band at its formation in November 2018. He has remained with the group throughout its history and continues as an active member today. Stachela contributed slide guitar, rhythm guitar, and lead guitar work to both Down to the River and Bless Your Heart albums.

Johnny was recruited as a seasoned player from the Devon Allman Project ensemble, bringing his slide guitar sorcery to the new supergroup. On stage, Stachela works alongside Devon Allman and Duane Betts as part of a three-guitar attack, with each guitarist finding their own sonic space. Stachela largely sticks with Gibson guitars, specifically an SG, and serves as “the third guitarist in the band” with a specific EQ bandwidth that complements the other guitarists.

During Duane Betts’ solo project Wild & Precious Life, Johnny Stachela served as guitarist in Betts’ backing band, demonstrating his continued musical partnership with the Allman Betts Band members. His slide guitar work has been particularly noted on tracks like “Carolina Song” from Bless Your Heart album. Stachela survived the band’s 2022 hiatus and continues as an active member of the current touring lineup.

John Ginty

John Ginty serves as the Hammond B3 organist for the Allman Betts Band. For their debut album Down to the River, the band initially worked with keyboardist Peter Levin, former member of Gregg Allman’s band, but for the subsequent world tour, the band brought in John Ginty as keyboarder, who remains part of the current lineup.

John Ginty has previous credits working with The Chicks and Robert Randolph. He joined the band’s touring lineup after the release of Down to the River in 2019 and contributed to the recording of Bless Your Heart in 2020. Ginty’s Hammond B3 organ work and keyboard contributions have been consistently praised, particularly on tracks like “Carolina Song.”

Ginty remained with the band through their 2022 hiatus and continues as an active member of the current touring lineup that reformed in 2023. His keyboard work provides the classic Southern rock organ sound that connects the band’s music to their fathers’ legacy while supporting their original compositions.

John Lum

John Lum serves as drummer for the Allman Betts Band, recruited as one of the seasoned players from the Devon Allman Project ensemble. He joined the band at its formation in November 2018 and contributed drums to both Down to the River and Bless Your Heart albums. His “shuffling drums” work has been noted as providing solid rhythmic foundation, particularly on instrumental showcases like “Savannah’s Dream.”

John Lum remained with the band through their 2022 hiatus and continues as an active member today. In the band’s current expanded lineup that reformed in 2023, Lum continues as one of two drummers, working alongside Alex Orbison. His tenure spans the band’s entire history from formation through present day, making him one of the most consistent members of the group.

R. Scott Bryan

R. Scott Bryan serves as percussionist and vocalist for the Allman Betts Band, recruited as a seasoned player from the Devon Allman Project ensemble. Bryan has previous credits working with Sheryl Crow. He joined the band at its formation in November 2018 and contributed percussion and backing vocals to both Down to the River and Bless Your Heart albums.

Bryan was listed among the core seven-piece band members during the original lineup: Devon Allman (guitar, vocals), Duane Betts (guitar, vocals), Berry Duane Oakley (bass), Johnny Stachela (guitar, vocals), John Ginty (keyboards), R Scott Bryan (percussion, vocals) and John Lum (drums). Bryan remained with the band through their 2022 hiatus.

However, when the band returned in 2023 with an expanded and reconfigured lineup, R. Scott Bryan was no longer listed among the active touring members, with David Gomez taking over percussion duties. Bryan’s tenure with the band lasted from November 2018 through early 2022, spanning both studio albums and extensive touring until the hiatus.

Alex Orbison

Alex Orbison joined the band on drums, replacing R. Scott Bryan when the Allman Betts Band returned to touring in 2024. Alex Orbison is the son of rock and roll pioneer Roy Orbison. He became part of the expanded lineup when the band reformed in 2023, serving as one of two drummers alongside John Lum.

Alex Orbison has been a consistent performer with the Allman Betts Family Revival concerts, appearing at venues like the Beacon Theatre. His addition to the band represents the continuation of rock music legacy, bringing the son of another legendary performer into the group. Orbison serves as drummer and provides percussion and vocals in the current touring lineup.

Alex joined the band after their hiatus period and has been an active member from 2023 to present. He did not contribute to either of the band’s studio albums, as both were recorded before his membership, but has been integral to their return to active touring and their ongoing Family Revival concert series.

Justin Corgan

Justin Corgan serves as bassist in the Allman Betts Band’s current lineup, joining when the group returned from hiatus in 2023. He replaced Berry Duane Oakley in the bass position as part of the band’s expanded and reconfigured touring lineup. Corgan has been noted for his solid bass work in the current seven-piece touring configuration.

Corgan did not contribute to either Down to the River or Bless Your Heart albums, as both were recorded before his membership. He joined the band after their hiatus period and has been an active touring member from 2023 to present. His bass work has been noted in live performances, contributing to the band’s “dynamic, moody guitar riffs” and overall sound during concerts.

His addition to the lineup allowed the band to continue their musical legacy while Berry Duane Oakley pursued other projects. Corgan’s role demonstrates the band’s commitment to maintaining their Southern rock sound and extensive touring schedule while adapting to member changes.

David Gomez

David Gomez serves as percussionist and saxophonist in the Allman Betts Band’s current lineup, joining when the group returned from hiatus in 2023. He replaced R. Scott Bryan in the percussion role as part of the band’s expanded touring lineup. Gomez provides percussion work alongside the band’s dual drummer setup of John Lum and Alex Orbison.

David Gomez has been an active participant in the Allman Betts Family Revival concerts, contributing percussion to the extended jams and collaborative performances that define these annual tour events. His saxophone work adds a new dimension to the band’s sound that wasn’t present in their original studio recordings.

Gomez did not contribute to either studio album, as both were recorded before his membership. He joined the band after their hiatus period and has been an active touring member from 2023 to present, adding both percussion and wind instrument capabilities to their live performances.
