Toby Keith Covel grew up in Clinton, Oklahoma, before moving with his family to Moore. His early years were shaped by summers spent at his grandmother’s supper club in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he first picked up a guitar at age eight and occasionally joined musicians on the bandstand. After graduating from Moore High School, Keith worked as a derrick hand in Oklahoma’s oil fields while performing with his band, Easy Money.

Keith turned his full attention to music after the Oklahoma oil industry declined in the early 1980s. Following a brief attempt to play semi-professional football, he began performing throughout Oklahoma and Texas. His persistence paid off when he signed with Mercury Nashville and released “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” in 1993. The song reached number one on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and became the most-played country song of the 1990s.

Keith released 21 studio albums, including the Christmas collections Christmas to Christmas and A Classic Christmas. His early albums Toby Keith, Boomtown, Blue Moon, and Dream Walkin’ established him as a consistent country hitmaker. How Do You Like Me Now?!, released in 1999, marked a major commercial breakthrough, while its title track became Billboard’s number-one country song of 2000.

During the early 2000s, Keith dominated country radio with Pull My Chain, Unleashed, and Shock’n Y’all. His catalog produced 20 number-one singles on Billboard’s country chart, including “I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight,” “I Wanna Talk About Me,” “My List,” “Beer for My Horses,” “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” “American Soldier,” and “As Good as I Once Was.”

Keith’s songs frequently combined humor, direct storytelling, patriotism, and blue-collar observation. His best-known recordings also include “He Ain’t Worth Missing,” “Wish I Didn’t Know Now,” “Who’s That Man,” “You Shouldn’t Kiss Me Like This,” “I Love This Bar,” “Whiskey Girl,” “Made in America,” and “Red Solo Cup.”

His songwriting earned him induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015. Keith received seven Grammy nominations, along with awards from the Academy of Country Music, Country Music Association, and American Music Awards. He received the National Medal of Arts in January 2021.

Keith also pursued business ventures that gave him greater control over his work. He founded Show Dog Nashville in 2005, later operating as Show Dog-Universal Music, and opened the Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill restaurant chain. His work outside the recording studio included acting in Broken Bridges and co-writing and starring in Beer for My Horses.

Keith maintained a long relationship with the United Service Organizations and completed 18 USO tours in support of American military personnel. His concerts for service members became one of the defining parts of his public life.

After announcing that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer, Keith returned to the stage for performances in Las Vegas in December 2023. He died on February 5, 2024, at age 62. Keith had been elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame shortly before his death and was formally inducted posthumously on October 20, 2024.

Posthumous releases continued to expand his catalog. A remastered edition of Christmas to Christmas added “Old Toy Trains” in 2024, and the previously unreleased “End of the Night (Demo)” arrived in 2025. His music also continued to receive new certifications and renewed chart attention.

Keith sold more than 30 million albums in the United States and placed 65 singles on Billboard’s country chart. His lasting appeal rests on the combination of an unmistakable baritone voice, direct songwriting, humor, patriotism, and the independent streak that guided his career.
