For Hydra, Toto continued working with engineer Tom Knox and took on a more collaborative approach to production within the band itself.

The musicianship on Hydra is sophisticated, featuring the same lineup as the debut: Steve Lukather on guitars and vocals, David Paich on keyboards and vocals, Bobby Kimball on lead and backing vocals, Steve Porcaro on keyboards, David Hungate on bass, and Jeff Porcaro on drums. This album saw the band pushing more towards a progressive rock sound, particularly evident in the complex arrangements and the title track’s extended instrumental passages.
