We Came As Romans built their reputation through passion, perseverance, and a message of hope that resonated deeply with their fans. The band was formed in Troy, Michigan, in 2005, originally under the name This Emergency before adopting their now-famous moniker two years later. Founding members Joshua Moore, David Stephens, Lou Cotton, Andy Glass, and Eric Choi would soon craft a sound that fused melodic metalcore with post-hardcore energy, emphasizing uplifting lyrical themes that set them apart from many of their peers. Their early years were spent touring relentlessly across the Midwest, earning a loyal grassroots following before breaking into the national scene.
Their debut album, To Plant a Seed, was released in 2009 through Equal Vision Records and immediately put We Came As Romans on the map. Produced by Joey Sturgis, known for his work with Asking Alexandria and The Devil Wears Prada, the record introduced the band’s blend of melodic guitar work, electronic elements, and powerful breakdowns. Songs like “To Move On Is to Grow” and the title track became fan favorites, delivering messages about unity, personal growth, and perseverance. The album was followed by extensive touring across North America and Europe, solidifying their place within the metalcore community.
In 2011, the band released their second album, Understanding What We’ve Grown to Be, which marked a darker and more mature turn in their songwriting. While their debut carried a message of optimism, this record explored the challenges of maintaining hope in the face of disillusionment and personal struggle. The album charted on the Billboard 200 and featured standout tracks such as “Mis//Understanding,” “What I Wished I Never Had,” and “Just Keep Breathing.” The record’s success helped We Came As Romans reach a broader audience, and the band became known for pairing emotional vulnerability with unyielding intensity.
Their third album, Tracing Back Roots, arrived in 2013 and was a defining moment for the band. The album debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200, their highest chart position at the time, and was praised for its melodic progression and more polished sound. Produced again by John Feldmann, the record included memorable tracks like “Hope,” “Fade Away,” and “I Survive,” featuring Aaron Gillespie of Underoath. The album’s central theme of learning from the past and finding strength through adversity struck a chord with fans, and it became one of the band’s most celebrated releases.
In 2015, We Came As Romans released their self-titled fourth album, which marked a stylistic evolution as they began experimenting with cleaner production and more accessible arrangements. Songs such as “The World I Used to Know” and “Regenerate” showcased the band’s ability to balance heaviness with melody while maintaining their emotional depth. Although some fans were divided by the shift in sound, the record demonstrated the group’s willingness to grow artistically. The following year, the band continued to tour extensively, performing on major festival circuits and sharing stages with acts like Parkway Drive, August Burns Red, and A Day to Remember.
Their fifth studio album, Cold Like War, released in 2017, brought We Came As Romans back to their heavier roots while maintaining their knack for melody. The record was a critical success and included the singles “Wasted Age” and “Cold Like War.” The album’s lyrical content reflected the band’s experiences with personal loss, inner conflict, and resilience, all delivered with the emotional sincerity that defined their career. Tragically, in 2018, the band faced an unimaginable loss when their co-lead vocalist Kyle Pavone passed away from an accidental overdose. His death sent shockwaves through the metal community, as Pavone had been both a creative force and a beloved presence within the band.
Rather than disbanding, We Came As Romans made the courageous decision to continue in Kyle’s honor. David Stephens took on full vocal duties, and the band dedicated themselves to preserving Pavone’s legacy through their music. In 2022, they released their sixth studio album, Darkbloom, a record that balanced grief with hope. The title track and songs such as “Plagued,” “Daggers,” and “Golden” were emotional testaments to endurance and rebirth, themes that had been part of the band’s message since their inception. Darkbloom received critical acclaim for its honesty and emotional weight, marking a new chapter for We Came As Romans as they continued to grow while paying tribute to their fallen bandmate.
