INXS began in Sydney in August 1977 as the Farriss Brothers. Andrew, Tim, and Jon Farriss joined Garry Gary Beers, Michael Hutchence, and Kirk Pengilly, forming a close-knit group built on school friendships and a shared musical ambition. The band adopted the name INXS in 1979, beginning a career that would transform Australian rock.

Their self-titled debut album arrived in October 1980 after being recorded during midnight-to-dawn studio sessions. It reached Australia’s Top 30 and produced “Just Keep Walking,” the band’s first Australian Top 40 single. Underneath the Colours followed in 1981, while Shabooh Shoobah in 1982 brought tighter songwriting, more polished production, and growing international attention.

A turning point came with The Swing in 1984. The album established INXS as a major act in Australia and included “Original Sin,” produced by Nile Rodgers. Listen Like Thieves followed in 1985 and delivered the band’s international breakthrough. “What You Need” became INXS’s first Top Five single in the United States.

The apex of the band’s mainstream success arrived in October 1987 with Kick. The album produced four Top 10 singles in the United States: “Need You Tonight,” “New Sensation,” “Devil Inside,” and “Never Tear Us Apart.” “Need You Tonight” became the band’s only number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, while Kick reached number three on the Billboard 200 and became one of the defining rock albums of the decade.

X followed in 1990, producing “Suicide Blonde,” “Disappear,” “By My Side,” and “Bitter Tears.” The album confirmed that INXS could follow its largest commercial success without abandoning the combination of rock, funk, pop, and dance music that had become central to the band’s sound.

INXS changed direction again with Welcome to Wherever You Are in 1992, incorporating orchestral arrangements, sitar, and a rawer alternative-rock edge. Full Moon, Dirty Hearts followed in 1993 with guest appearances by Ray Charles and Chrissie Hynde. The 1994 compilation The Greatest Hits added “The Strangest Party (These Are the Times)” and “Deliver Me” to the band’s catalog.

The final INXS studio album recorded with Michael Hutchence, Elegantly Wasted, appeared in April 1997. Hutchence died on November 22, 1997, ending the era defined by his voice, songwriting partnership with Andrew Farriss, and commanding stage presence.

INXS continued after Hutchence’s death with several lead singers. Jon Stevens performed with the band from 2000 to 2003. J.D. Fortune won the television series Rock Star: INXS in 2005 and sang on Switch. Ciaran Gribbin later fronted the group before INXS announced at a November 2012 concert that it was ending its regular live performances.

Across its career, INXS released 12 studio albums, beginning with INXS in 1980 and concluding with Original Sin in 2010. Original Sin presented newly recorded interpretations of earlier INXS songs with guest vocalists including Ben Harper, Rob Thomas, Tricky, Nikka Costa, and J.D. Fortune.

INXS also released major live and compilation albums, including Live Baby Live, The Greatest Hits, The Best of INXS, Definitive INXS, and The Very Best. The group’s catalog includes album tracks, singles, soundtrack recordings, B-sides, alternate versions, remixes, and live performances.

INXS became one of Australia’s most successful international bands, selling more than 80 million records worldwide. The group won multiple ARIA Awards and entered the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. The “Need You Tonight/Mediate” video won five MTV Video Music Awards in 1988, including Video of the Year.

The band’s music combined rock, funk, dance, new wave, soul, and pop without losing the identity created by the six original members. Side projects including Max Q, later documentaries such as Mystify: Michael Hutchence, and the television miniseries INXS: Never Tear Us Apart continued to introduce the group’s story to new audiences.

In 2025, INXS marked the 40th anniversary of Listen Like Thieves with an expanded edition featuring a new stereo mix, demos, outtakes, and live recordings. The release demonstrated the continuing interest in the band’s studio work and the depth of material created during its rise to international success.

INXS built a legacy through reinvention, crossover success, memorable videos, and commanding live performances. The band’s journey from Sydney clubs to stadiums around the world produced a catalog that remains central to Australian rock history.
