Top 10 Cody Johnson Songs

Cody Johnson Songs

This Top 10 Cody Johnson Songs list presents the best Cody Johnson Songs including “On My Way to You,” “Til You Can’t” and more. Texas-born and raised Cody Johnson first burst on the scene as a recording artist for the country music genre with his debut album, Black and White Label, which was independently released as CoJo in 2006. Although it didn’t serve as his big breakthrough on any of the US Billboards yet, it served as the starting point to a young man’s career that was destined for greatness.

He, along with his father, Carl Johnson, performed together as a band, along with drummer Nathan Reedy at the timing of the first album’s release. Afterward, Matt Rogers joined as lead guitarist and the group performed its first live album, Live and Rocking. After this performance, Johnson’s father left the band. He was replaced in 2009 by bass guitarist, Danny Salinas before the release of the Six Strings One Dream that same year in September.

It would be from this album Cody Johnson would increase the fan base of his band as three singles managed to reach the top ten music charts within the state of Texas. After this, fiddler Chris Whitten and lead guitarist Jeff Smith joined the band. Whitten’s time with the band was brief as he was replaced in 2010 by Jody Bartula.

A Different Day became Johnson’s fourth studio album, which was released in October 2011. This album earned Johnson a Texas Regional Music Award for New Male Vocalist of the Year in 2011, inspiring the country artist to leave his day job in favor of pursuing music as a full-time career. Come January 2014, Johnson’s studio album, Cowboy Like Me, marked the first time Johnson’s music would appear on any of the US Billboard charts as it peaked as high as number seven on the US Billboard Top Country Albums chart and at number thirty-three on the US Billboard 200. At this point, the fan base of Cody Johnson continued to see growth, especially beyond the borders of Texas.

In 2016, Gotta Be Me performed even better as it sold 23,000 copies within the first week as opposed to the 8,000 copies sold that were sold in 2014. This is an impressive feat as this was still an independently produced album that had no major record label representing Johnson’s music. It wasn’t until 2019’s Aint’ Nothin’ to It did he record and released through a major label, namely Warner Music Nashville. His second album with this label, Human: The Double Album, was released in 2021, making the total roster of his album production at eight.

Top 10 Cody Johnson Songs

#10 – Cowboy Like Me

From the 2014 album with the same name, “Cowboy Like Me” was a song that illustrated Cody Johnson’s roots as a born and raised cowboy that still has that part about him flowing through his veins. This awesome ballad also witnessed him pay homage to the special lady in his life who stood by him and supported him as he lived his life as an official cowboy who spent time in honky tonk bars and the rodeo scene.

Prior to becoming a country music star, Cody Johnson rode bulls on the rodeo circuit before realizing he also felt a passion to perform music. It also happens to pay better although the music industry can be just as much of a bumpy ride as the wildest bucking bull. The beginning of the song, “Cowboy Like Me” starts with someone changing the radio station until finding words of wisdom cowboys like Johnson can relate to.

#9 – Texas Kind of Way

Some of the best music ever performed usually has an attachment to the original roots of the recording artist as they share a piece of themselves, along with the pride that comes with it. In the case of “Texas Kind of Way,” Cody Johnson not only reveals how proud he is to be born and raised as a Texan but of a state that has mostly managed to stick to its roots despite the flux of changes that go on everywhere else in the nation that may or not be seen as a sign of progress. The love of home and country is evident as Cody Johnson’s song from his 2009 album, Six Strings One Dream, became one of three to grace the music charts belonging to the Lonestar State.

#8 – By Your Grace

From the album, Human: The Double Album, 2022’s “By Your Grace” was a single that especially appealed to the Christian audience as this piece of acoustic beauty saw Cody Johnson at his vulnerable best. As he sings and strums “By Your Grace,” it was clear he was addressing his savior, Jesus Christ. As a man dealing with the sins of his past that still haunt him, his request is God extends his grace to help him overcome the challenges so that he can become a better man. Whether you’re a Christian fan or not, this is an incredibly inspirational song to help one use faith to overcome fear and kick off the anchor of the past that weighs you down.

#7 – Ain’t Nothin’ to It

The title track from the album, Ain’t Nothin’ to It, peaked at number forty-two on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 2019. “Ain’t Nothin’ to It” became the third of four songs brought forth by the album that became a hit, serving as an official notice that Cody Johnson was more than simply a one-hit-wonder. The world of country music has a star on its hands who is perfectly qualified to play in Nashville’s big league of legends as a world-class performer.

The awesome blend of the contemporary country meeting traditional saw Johnson reveal his raw talent to bridge old-school material with the new and make it a fan-favorite classic. “Ain’t Nothin’ to It” was another one of Johnson’s many songs that shared a piece of his past as he was a bull rider before venturing into the genre of country music as a recording artist. When one’s heart is into doing something and is willing to put in the effort, the only challenge that serves as an obstacle is the refusal to let go of the ego in order to overcome it.

#6 – Dear Rodeo (featuring Reba McEntire)

“Dear Rodeo” was the first duet Cody Johnson ever performed with another country star that would become a charted hit on the US Billboards. This collaborated single featured country superstar, Reba McEntire, as the contrast of the two’s voices worked beautifully off each other. On the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, “Dear Rodeo” charted as high as number forty-three and was a number forty-nine hit on the RPM Canadian Country Tracks chart after it was released as a single in 2020.

It was the fourth hit song from the album, Ain’t Nothin’ to It, which was released on January 18, 2019. Through the eyes of a rodeo star, which was what Johnson was before becoming a recording artist, he and Reba McEntire share the lyrical tale of how awesome strength can become when used as a means to overcome certain challenges. The key to overcoming any challenge is learning how to turn the page and put the past where it belongs as one moves forward in favor of something better.

#5 – Wild as You

Released in 2017 as the second single from the album, Gotta Be Me, “Wild as You” became a number fifty-three hit song on the US Billboard Country Airplay chart. While its highest chart position may not sound like an amazing feat, the fact this was achieved as an independent label that didn’t share the same amount of commercial promotion as something produced through a major label is still noteworthy.

Also, it became certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and this is where the right for “Wild as You” to be classified as a country song gem that’s worth its weight. This fiddle-fancying ballad witnessed Cody Johnson at his finest as he reveals a piece of his vulnerability while appreciating his love interest for who and what she is, which is the perfect woman in his eyes.

#4 – Nothin’ on You

There’s a reason why “Nothin on You” became an RIAA-certified gold hit single. As the follow-up song behind Cody Johnson’s best-selling hit to date, “On My Way to You,” this song from the album, Ain’t Nothin’ to It, peaked at number forty-three on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart after it was released as a single in 2019. At the beginning of the song, before Johnson’s lyrics, there’s an acoustic hint of nostalgia. That continues, adding the beauty of traditional country music to what truly is an amazing love song. If there was ever the perfect country ballad to play for that special someone to simply show your appreciation, “Nothin’ on You” would be it.

#3 – With You I Am

“With You I Am” was the first single released by Cody Johnson to appear on any official US Billboard music charts. After its release in 2016, it climbed as high as number forty-six on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, officially putting Johnson’s name on the map as a country music star full of promise. At the time, Johnson was still recording and releasing music as an independent label, CoJo. “With You I Am” was from his sixth album, Gotta Be Me, which was released on August 5, 2016. The honesty behind this song hits home, justifiably earning its place among the hearts of music fans, regardless of genre preferences.

#2 – Til You Can’t

On the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and the RPM Canadian Country Tracks chart, “Til You Can’t” was the first number one hit single released by Cody Johnson in his career run as a recording artist for the country music genre. It also became his best hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number eighteen.

From his eighth album, Human: The Double Album, this 2021 optimistic single served as a source of musical inspiration among members of society having to contend with the dark times this world has been producing as of late. So, the next time you feel so down because you feel the environment around you is out to get you, take a good listen to “Til You Can’t” and remind yourself that you may be stronger than you think.

#1 – On My Way to You

In 2018, Cody Johnson released his seventh album recording, Ain’t Nothin’ to It, which also happened to be his first through a major record label, namely Warner Music Nashville. “On My Way to You” was popular enough among the fans to become certified platinum with the RIAA and it was a number thirteen hit on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, a number twenty hit on the RIAA Canadian Country Tracks chart, and a crossover hit at number seventy-eight on the US Billboard Hot 100. Johnson’s inspiration behind the song came from his wife, to whom he sings he’s returning home after spending so much time on the road.

While popular recording artists such as Johnson share a success level that may be the envy of the average Joe, the amount of time spent on the road doing promotions and tours has been known to take its toll on what seems like the strongest relationships. As awesome as it may be for some of the top stars in the music business, sometimes the longing for home to be with that special someone is enough to stay true to one’s self and not let the money and fame get the best of them.
