Holy Soldier was formed in 1985 in Los Angeles, California, as a Christian hard rock and metal band. The original lineup included bassist Andy Robbins, guitarist Jamie Cramer, guitarist Michael Cutting, drummer Terry Russell, and vocalist Steven Patrick. The band quickly became known for their melodic approach to hard rock and their lyrics, which consistently reflected Christian themes and messages.

In the late 1980s, Holy Soldier developed a following by performing throughout Southern California, gaining traction in the Christian rock and metal scenes. They signed with Myrrh Records, a label specializing in contemporary Christian music, and released their self-titled debut album, Holy Soldier, in 1990.
