Songs With Light In The Title

Well, if there ever was a more positive word to be used in the title of a song, it has to be the word ‘light.’ I mean, it’s pretty hard to write negative stuff when starting a song out with ‘light’ in the title. I’m sure there are plenty, but in the end, I think the majority of songs that use the word “light” are positive or somewhat joyous. Here are 10 of our favorites. They may not necessarily be the 10 most famous; some are, but they are 10 of our favorites. What’s yours?

# 10 – See The Light – Jeff Healy Band

This was the first one I thought of, so it opens up this list. I remember the first time I saw the Jeff Healey Band on TV playing this song. It’s just one of those moments where your socks are knocked right off. Man, this guy could play. There was something really special about the late Jeff Healey’s playing. I never saw anybody playing guitar the way he did in his style. This tune rocks hard

# 9 – You Are The Light – Lone Justice

The breathtaking vocals of Maria McKee shine brightly on this sensational track. The song “You Are The Light ” was released on the band’s debut album Lone Justice. The album was released in 1985, and everybody who heard it for the first time dropped what they were doing. This beautiful song was the closing track on the record. It was written by Marvin Etzioni, the band’s bassist and founding member.

# 8 – Light My Fire – The Doors

While we’re going to be digging in deep here on this list, here’s one that’s probably one of the most famous songs ever to use the word light in the title. This was released on the band’s debut album in 1967. The song “Light My Fire” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

# 7 – Blinded By The Light – Manfred Mann’s Earth Band

Yes, yes, I know Bruce Springsteen wrote this. I heard his version a million times. It was the opening song on his debut album. But it would be hard to argue that this is not one of the most original and greatest cover songs of all time. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band’s version of this Springsteen song rocketed around the world, becoming one of the biggest hits of the year in 1976-77. I have to tell you that one of my favorite interviews of all time was with Chris Slade, one of the founding members of the band, who did the arrangement on this song. We spoke for 2 hours, and he was just such a wonderful person.

# 6 – Tiny Light – Grace Potter And The Nocturnals

Grace Potter’s voice, soulfulness, spirit, and her music clearly echos the heart of the 1960s and ’70s. When some of the older readers of this site say things to me like there’s no great music anymore, I always point them to artists like Grace Potter. But don’t just take my word, listen to the song below, and you will understand my fine friends.

# 5 – Traveling Light -Burt Bacharach and Daniel Tashian

If this one doesn’t warm your heart, you’d better go see a doctor or maybe a priest. Soft jazz, smooth vocals, and the haunting yet beautiful melodic touch of the master, the late legendary Burt Bacharach.

# 4 – Light Years of Love –  Blue Öyster Cult

As someone who has been writing about rock music for the past two decades, one of the bands that always gets the most love that I write about is easily Blue Öyster Cult. These guys are as genuine as it gets, delivering solid rock music for six decades. I have always loved this underrated album and this stunning mid-tempo rock ballad.

# 3 – Leave A Light On – Belinda Carlisle

This just may be my favorite Belinda Carlisle solo song. I love the work of the Go-Go’s, of course, but her solo albums were just so phenomenal. There’s just something magical about her voice. I can listen to her all day and night.

# 2 – Harbor Lights – Boz Scaggs

There was just nobody cooler than Boz Scaggs in the 1970s. Sorry, Robert Palmer,  but Boz takes the crown. Did you know anybody in the 1970s who did not have the album Silk Degrees? This soulful ballad was the closing track on side one. It was written by Boz himself.

# 1 – In The Light – Led Zeppelin

We are ending this list with a track from what I believe is the greatest Led Zeppelin album of all time, Physical Graffiti. Opening up Side Three and running close to nine minutes, this song and album wore out many needles on record players around the world. The greatest rock band of all time. Do not argue, it’s a FACT!
