Ever since we started our sister site, rockingfoodie.com, I have wanted to do more rock songs about food. It’s just a natural thing. Even when I’m interviewing the Rockers, I find myself being guided to ask where their favorite restaurants are. It was fun asking Ted Nugent that. Don’t miss that interview. One of the funniest reactions came from Greg T Walker of Blackfoot, who told me he couldn’t find grits in New York. Nope, we have home fries here. Nonetheless, I thought this would be a fun one to do. Songs about sugar, or should I say songs with the word sugar in the title. There are thousands. Here are 10 of my favorites. What are yours?
# 10 – Sugar On The Floor
We open this list with a rare Elton John track called “Sugar On The Floor.” This beautiful ballad was actually written by Kiki Dee. It was released in 1975 as the B-side to “Island Girl.” It would later appear on the remastered CD version of the Rock of the Westies album as a bonus track. It would also appear on the two-CD set Rare Masters.
# 9 – Sugar Town
Everyone always remembers Nancy Sinatra for her big hit “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” or her duets with Lee Greenwood. Yet this was always one of my favorites. Her appearance below on The Ed Sullivan Show was legendary. Don’t miss this.
# 8 – Sugar Magnolia – The Grateful Dead
Yes, we decided on this list, we were going to go with some of the biggest ones. If I’m going to do that, then I can’t leave this one off the list. I would have a lot of angry Deadheads at me.
# 7 – Sugar – Jennifer Nettles
There’s just something about Jennifer Nettles that makes you not want to stop listening to her. Her voice, besides just being superb, is just addictive. Yes, she’s more on the countryside of things, but there’s a bit of a rock edge to her. I also love her videos as a solo artist and, of course, with Sugarland.
# 6 – Pour Some Sugar On Me – Def Leppard
On a list where there are so many classics that we just couldn’t leave off, this one is definitely up there. These guys are still out there rocking hard and sounding even better than they did in the ’80s.
# 5 – Four Tops – I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)
When I was in the top 40 party band in the 1980s, people used to always come up to me and say, ” Hey, can you play that song, Sugar Pie Honey Bunch? ” No one ever said, ‘ Can you play the song I Can’t Help Myself? ‘ It was always, ‘ Can you play the song “Sugar Pie.” And you know what, whenever we played it, the place went nuts. That opening baseline got everybody on their feet.
# 4 – No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature
One of the all-time legendary Guess Who songs was released on their fabulous album American Woman. The album was released in 1970. The song’s original popularity was fueled by its inclusion as the B-side to the single “American Woman.”

# 3 – Sugar Mountain – Neil Young
Easily one of Neil Young’s all-time greatest songs. It’s amazing that this song was never released on any of his studio albums until the compilation Decade in 1977. It had previously only been available as a B-side to various singles, including ” The Loner ” and “Cinnamon Girl.”
# 2 -Sugar, Sugar – The Archies
If one ever wanted to define the meaning of bubblegum pop that became widely popular in the late sixties, early seventies, look no further than this song by a band that didn’t really even exist, The Archies. The song, written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, went all the way to number one on the Billboard 100. And even lasted an entire month at number one. Oh, and by the way, I always picked Veronica over Betty.
# 1 – Brown Sugar – The Rolling Stones
This was an easy one. The first one that probably came to mind for every rock fan out there who grew up in the 1970s. This was a massive hit for the Rolling Stones. It was the opening track to the Sticky Fingers album. One of the greatest Rolling Stones albums of all time.
