Our list of the 10 Most Overplayed Songs in Rock Music is not meant to criticize these songs in any way. We love them! They are all brilliant pieces of music that have brought us great joy over the years. However, since the 1960s, with both AM and FM radio, these songs have been played excessively. It’s not just on the radio; think about how many cover bands and, of course, nowadays, DJs have spun some of these tracks just one too many times at nightclubs and parties. Some of them have even infiltrated commercials and various other forms of delivery to continue capitalizing on their popularity. Of course, there are more than 10, but these are the ones that get under your skin from hearing them so many times. What would you pick?
# 10 – Smoke On The Water – Deep Purple
We open our 10 Most Overplayed Songs in Rock Music list with the legendary song “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple. Obviously, this song has been played a bazillion times on the radio and at parties, and all that jazz. However, that’s not the reason this one gets picked for this list. “Smoke on the Water” gets the opening slot here because every time I’ve walked into a music store like Guitar Center, Sam Ash, or any store that sells musical instruments, especially guitars, there is always at least one guy playing this song on the guitar.

# 9 – Hotel California – The Eagles
Are there any Rock Fans Left Alive on this planet who can’t name this song after hearing only the first single guitar note? That opening guitar riff is just so distinctive. Hands down, it’s the Eagles’ greatest album. Yet I don’t think there’s any doubt that “Hotel California” has just been spun one too many times over the years.
# 8 – Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
It’s hard for a song that pretty much changed rock and roll music in the early ’90s not to become overplayed. You couldn’t turn on MTV and go 10 or 15 minutes without seeing this video. A whole new generation of rock fans came of age with the band Nirvana. Even the older fans liked them for the most part.
# 7 – Don’t Stop Believing – Journey
If there was one negative impact that the brilliant Sopranos television show had on pop culture, it was the utilization of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” in the final scene of the series. Now, I’m not arguing that it wasn’t used well. Some say that David Chase pulled off one of the most brilliant endings in TV history, while others just completely hated it. Nonetheless, the radio never stopped playing that song from that point on, and it became even bigger than it was before.
# 6 – Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd
“Comfortably Numb” is the first of two Pink Floyd songs to make this list. And let me tell you, we probably could have put a lot more on here. I don’t know what it is, but Classic Rock Radio seems to have a particular fondness for Pink Floyd. I mean, of course, they’re one of the greatest bands of all time, but they play Pink Floyd constantly. Not only is it the first of two Pink Floyd songs, but it’s also the first of two songs from the album The Wall. I’m sure you know what the next one will be.
# 5 – Freebird – Lynyrd Skynyrd
I spent many years performing in nightclubs in the New York metropolitan area with various rock and cover bands. In the 1980s. Every single night of my life, when we walked on stage, there was always at least a couple of people screaming “Free Bird, Free Bird, Free Bird.” The calls would never end until we finally played it.

4 – In The Air Tonight – Phil Collins
We can thank Miami Vice for this one. Oh yeah, and let’s not forget everyone pretending to play air drums. The amusing thing about this song was that it had never been particularly popular before it was revived in the Miami Vice episodes. It then became a pop culture phenomenon.
# 3 – Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
I loved this song when it was first released; it completely blew my mind. I, along with millions of others, had never heard anything like it. But, OMG, did radio play the blood and guts out of this song? And, of course, a few years ago, when the Queen movie gained popularity on Netflix and millions of young people first discovered Queen, it all started again.

# 2 – Another Brick In The Wall – Pink Floyd
Just off the top spot on our 10 Most Overplayed Songs in Rock Music list, we present a song from one of the biggest albums of the 1980s. Yes, we know it was released in December of 1979, but give me a break, it’s an ’80s album. Classic rock radio still plays the heck out of this one. I’m sorry, but I have to turn the dial because I’ve just had enough. I love Pink Floyd, but I was never really a big fan of The Wall album. I’ll take Animals, Wish You Were Here, or Meddle on any given day—and of course, Dark Side too.
# 1 – Stairway To Heaven – Led Zeppelin
We close out our list of the 10 Most Overplayed Songs in Rock Music with the one you knew just had to be number one. It’s incredible how such an epic, long song can be overplayed, but anyone who grew up in the 1970s knows just how many times this song was played constantly. It has eased up a bit in recent memory, but the damage was already done. If you didn’t know, the song was released on Led Zeppelin’s fourth album in 1971.

Nimber 2 should have been Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.
As far as Classic Rock mainstream radio stations go, I would add Boston’s More Than A Feeling, Heart’s Barracuda, and Kansas’ Carry On Wayward Son.
