When it comes to using the word supergroups in an article title, fans instantly think of bands like Asia, Traveling Wilburys, Cream, etc… However, rock and roll history is filled with supergroups that excited fans with the possibility of endless albums of pure rock and roll bliss, only to break up for many different reasons.

This list looks at supergroups that released only one studio album. Some of these bands recorded songs for a second album but broke up before the sequel was released. Record companies often release that extra material as bonus tracks on reissues or box sets. Many of these supergroups that released only one studio album also released live albums. Nonetheless, only one studio album made the list because that’s the article’s point. There are, of course, a handful of albums on this list that everyone knows. Some are semi-popular, and others you may have never heard of. We didn’t want to rate these albums; we just wanted to present them. They are listed in random order as they pretty much came to us.

This is a continuous list. As readers point out one that we miss, we will add them to the article.

Always loved the name of this band and the excellent album cover that depicted a band’s name as literally as one could get. HSAS is the supergroup that rock fans love to talk about. They were known as Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve. The group released one album entitled Through The Fire in 1984. The recordings were captured live during the band’s 1983 Bay Area shows and then edited in the studio to reduce the crowd noise. # 7 – KBC Band

The KBC Band was an offshoot of The Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship that consisted of Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, and Jack Casady. Some would argue this was more of a spin-off than a supergroup, but these musicians were all superstars in their own right, and so we added this one to the list. The group was also represented by musicians Keith Crossan, Tim Gorman, Darrell Verdusco, and Mark “Slick” Aguilar. The band released its lone studio album in 1986.

# 9 – Emerson Lake & Powell

Two in a row for Cozy Powell. When Keith Emerson and Greg Lake got back together to release a new album in the mid-1980s, Carl Palmer said sorry, I’m with ASIA now. Well, maybe he didn’t say it that way, but that’s the reason he was not available to reunite with Keith Emerson and Greg Lake. A new ELP supergroup was born for one album only, titled Emerson Lake & Powell, released in 1986.

You might not have heard of this great heavy metal supergroup, but what a lineup. The short-lived project consisted of Paul Di’Anno on vocals, Pete Willis and Janick Gers on guitars, Neil Murray on bass, and Clive Burr on drums. The band released one studio project in 1985 entitled I Will Be There. It wasn’t much of an album as far as length went; it was actually a three-song EP. But it was still a studio recording, and this one just seemed so enjoyable we just had to list it.

One studio album, Temple of the Dog, was released in 1991.

Guns), Share Pedersen (Vixen), and Bobby Blotzer (Ratt). The group released one self-titled studio album in 1991. This one is pretty rare. You won’t find this CD for a cheap price. # 16 – Super Session – Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield & Stephen Stills

Super Session was released in 1968. The album featured Al Kooper, a former member of the group Blood, Sweat & Tears; Mike Bloomfield, known for his work with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the Electric Flag; and Stephen Stills, who gained fame with Buffalo Springfield and later Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

The creation of Super Session originated from Al Kooper’s idea of recording a jam session with top musicians. The album was recorded over two days in 1968. Initially, Mike Bloomfield contributed his guitar prowess to the first day’s recordings. Bloomfield’s distinct, fluid guitar style, which had already earned him acclaim, was a significant driving force in the initial sessions. Bloomfield was unable to return for the second day of recording. This led to Stephen Stills stepping in to contribute his guitar skills for the remainder of the album.
