At the 2025 Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party, Chappell Roan shared the stage with Elton John during an evening that blended music, celebration, and philanthropy. The Midwest-born pop star joined the legendary singer at the foundation’s annual Academy Awards fundraiser, where John was balancing his hosting duties with an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. He also used the evening to spotlight Roan, whose rise in pop music had made her a prominent voice for self-expression and LGBTQ+ representation.

Roan delivered a vibrant performance that included her dancefloor-ready anthem “Hot To Go” before slowing things down with a heartfelt rendition of John’s classic “Your Song.” One of the evening’s biggest moments came when she and John teamed up for an emotional duet of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” Their performance carried an added sense of significance because of the connection between two generations of queer artistry.

Before the night ended, Roan presented John with a pink cowboy hat, an emblem of her flamboyant aesthetic. In a heartfelt tribute, she acknowledged his lifelong advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and the impact he had on artists like herself. “You have sacrificed so much for the queer community and you made it so I can be the artist I can be,” she told him, drawing cheers from the audience.

The grand finale found the duo performing Roan’s breakout hit, “Pink Pony Club,” with John wearing the pink hat she had given him. He joined in on the choruses and danced alongside Roan as the performance turned the venue into a celebration of music and community. At the time, fans on social media quickly noted the generational significance of seeing John, a trailblazer in LGBTQ+ visibility, sharing the stage with Roan.

After the event, John reflected on the night on Instagram, sharing a clip of their duet and calling it “nothing short of magical.” He described the evening at West Hollywood Park as “our own Pink Pony Club,” a space filled with love and community where everyone could be unapologetically themselves.

Beyond the star-studded performances, the event raised more than $8.6 million for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, supporting HIV prevention, treatment, and mental health services. John’s husband and foundation chairman, David Furnish, expressed gratitude to those who attended and donated. “Because of your generosity, we were able to celebrate with purpose, helping communities around the world access life-saving HIV prevention, treatment, and mental health support,” Furnish wrote in a statement.

The performances, especially Roan’s duet with John, spread quickly across social media after the event. One TikTok commenter wrote, “The way he’s watching her with so much pride, like yeah, dude, you helped pave the way for this. Can’t imagine how emotional he must feel.” Another commenter on X wrote, “You just know as a queer elder, Elton John is so happy to see how far our community has come since he was her age. Seeing Chappell dominate music must make his heart so happy.”

For Roan, the night represented a major career milestone and a public celebration of the artistic and personal identity she had embraced. For John, it added another chapter to a legacy shaped not only by music but also by decades of advocacy and support for LGBTQ+ communities. Their performances became one of the memorable music moments surrounding the 2025 Academy Awards.
