INXS was born in Sydney in August 1977 as The Farriss Brothers: brothers Andrew, Tim, and Jon Farriss joined forces with Garry Gary Beers, Michael Hutchence, and Kirk Pengilly. They debuted at Whale Beach, establishing a close-knit group fueled by school friendships and shared musical ambition. Their renaming to INXS (a play on “in excess” and inspired by IXL jam and the English band XTC) marked the start of a transformative era in Australian rock.
Their self-titled debut album arrived in October 1980, produced in the relentless hours between midnight and dawn. It broke into Australia’s Top 40 via “Just Keep Walking,” a single that announced their arrival. Follow‑up albums Underneath the Colours (1981) and Shabooh Shoobah (1982) saw the band expanding their palette with tighter songwriting, more polished production, and a growing audience in pubs and clubs.
A turning point came with The Swing (1984), establishing them as an international act, but Listen Like Thieves (1985) marked their real global breakthrough. It hit #1 in Australia and cracked the U.S. Billboard 200 at #11, fueled by “What You Need,” which became their first U.S. Top 5 hit. That track earned them the Australian Countdown Music and Video Award for Best Video.
The apex of their mainstream success arrived in October 1987 with Kick. The album exploded globally—certified six-times platinum in the U.S. alone and selling nearly 20 million copies worldwide. It pushed four Top 10 singles in the U.S.: “Need You Tonight” (their only U.S. #1), “New Sensation,” “Devil Inside,” and “Never Tear Us Apart.” Kick reached #3 on Billboard 200, remained 22 weeks in the top 10, and reappeared on charts decades later—testimony to its enduring impact.
X followed in 1990, yielding “Suicide Blonde,” “Disappear,” and “By My Side.” “Suicide Blonde” won APRA’s Most Performed Australian Work Overseas in 1991, while “By My Side” became a poignant symbol of longing and connection—even played at Hutchence’s funeral in 1997. Commercially, X reaffirmed their broad appeal with multiple charting singles.
Next came Welcome to Wherever You Are (1992), produced with Mark Opitz to achieve a rawer, more guitar-driven texture. Full Moon, Dirty Hearts followed in 1993, carrying threads of experimentation but not matching Kick’s commercial scope. In 1994 they released The Greatest Hits, which soared to #2 in Australia and #3 in the UK, then went platinum in the U.S.
Their final album with Hutchence, Elegantly Wasted, appeared in 1997 just months before his tragic death in November of that year. The world lost a frontman whose charisma commanded attention—he was the unmistakable focal point of INXS’s identity for two decades.
After Hutchence’s passing, INXS continued. They enlisted Jon Stevens (circa 2000–2003) and later ran the reality show Rock Star: INXS to find a new lead. Canadian J.D. Fortune won in 2005 and fronted them on Switch (2005) and the guest-filled covers album Original Sin (2010). Between 2011 and 2012 Ciaran Gribbin took over, before the band announced a final performance in November 2012—though they never officially disbanded.
Through their career, INXS released twelve studio albums from 1980’s debut through 2010’s Original Sin. They also issued numerous live and compilation albums, including The Greatest Hits, The Best of INXS (2002), and Definitive INXS (2002), which highlighted their depth of singles and rare tracks.
Accolade-wise, INXS is among Australia’s most celebrated acts. They’ve sold over 50 million records worldwide (15 million in the U.S.), earning nominations from ARIA, Grammys, and MTV VMAs. They won multiple ARIA Awards—including Best Group in 1987, 1989, and 1992—and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. APRA recognized them repeatedly: “What You Need” (1988), “Need You Tonight” (1989), “Devil Inside” (1990), “Suicide Blonde” (1991), and “Disappear” (1992) each earned awards for songwriting or performance.
INXS were loved for their bold genre fusion—combining rock, funk, dance, and pop—backed by Hutchence’s electrifying presence. Their musical versatility thrived in inventive music videos (the iconic “Need You Tonight/Mediate” won five MTV VMAs in 1988), stadium-size energy, and studio experimentation. They also embraced new media: the reality casting of Fortune and collaborations on Original Sin demonstrated their forward-thinking adaptability.
Beyond music, members engaged in side-projects like Max Q (Andrew Farriss with Hutchence), and in 2013 their story was dramatized in the mini-series INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, sparking renewed interest and chart resurgence in Australia. Documentaries like Mystify (2019) further illuminated Hutchence’s legacy, ensuring their story continues to reverberate.
In sum, INXS built a legacy rooted in bold reinvention, crossover success, and unforgettable performances. Their career spanned from teenage garage gigs in suburban Sydney to stadium stages worldwide, a catalogue of timeless songs, groundbreaking visuals, and an enduring influence that continues to inspire artists and audiences alike.
