5 Seconds of Summer formed in Sydney in 2011. Comprising members Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin, the band first gained international fame while touring with One Direction on the “Take Me Home” tour. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2014, marked their first foray into the music industry, featuring hits like “She Looks So Perfect” and “Amnesia.” This album catapulted them to global stardom, achieving multiple chart successes and making them the only band (not vocal group) to have their first two full-length albums debut at the top of the US Billboard 200. The band has since released several albums, including Sounds Good Feels Good (2015), Youngblood (2018), and Calm (2020), each reflecting their evolution in sound from pop-punk to a more nuanced mix of pop and rock. Their work has received numerous awards and nominations, solidifying their presence in the international music scene.

Luke Hemmings

Luke Hemmings is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of 5 Seconds of Summer. He has been with the band since its inception. Hemmings was initially one of the primary personalities behind the band’s YouTube presence, where they gained early recognition by posting covers of popular songs. His voice and charismatic stage presence have played a crucial role in the band’s identity. Luke has contributed significantly to the songwriting across all the band’s albums. In addition to his work with 5SOS, in 2021, Luke released a solo album titled When Facing the Things We Turn Away From, exploring more personal themes and a distinct sound from the band’s projects.

Calum Hood

Calum Hood plays bass guitar and provides vocals for 5 Seconds of Summer. He is one of the founding members and has been a significant force in shaping the band’s sound, contributing to songwriting and harmony vocals. Hood’s energetic performance style and backing vocals are integral to the band’s live shows. His involvement is critical on tracks like “Don’t Stop” and “Jet Black Heart.” Beyond the band, Calum has not pursued many public solo projects, focusing primarily on his contributions to 5SOS.

Ashton Irwin

Ashton Irwin, the drummer and vocalist of 5 Seconds of Summer, joined the band slightly after its formation, completing the current lineup. Irwin is known for his dynamic drumming style and vocal abilities, contributing heavily to the band’s sound and vocal harmonies. Ashton has also played a pivotal role in songwriting, particularly evident in the band’s later albums. In 2020, he released a solo album, Superbloom, which explores more personal and introspective themes, showcasing his depth as a musician beyond his drumming for 5SOS.
