BLACKPINK was formed by YG Entertainment, debuting on August 8, 2016, with their single album “Square One,” featuring the singles “Whistle” and “Boombayah.” Both songs immediately achieved significant chart success, with “Whistle” reaching number one on the South Korean Gaon Digital Chart, and “Boombayah” topping Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart. BLACKPINK is composed of four members: Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa, each selected after rigorous auditions and extensive training periods within YG Entertainment.

Following their successful debut, BLACKPINK released the second single album, “Square Two,” in November 2016. The album featured tracks “Playing with Fire” and “Stay,” both charting highly in South Korea, with “Playing with Fire” also performing well internationally. The group’s distinctive blend of K-pop, EDM, and hip-hop, combined with dynamic visuals, quickly attracted a global audience, establishing a large international following from early in their career.

In 2017, BLACKPINK expanded their presence in Japan, releasing their first Japanese EP, “Blackpink,” which debuted at number one on the Oricon Albums Chart. The group’s international appeal continued to grow significantly after the release of their single “As If It’s Your Last” in June 2017, which accumulated massive streaming numbers and became a viral hit. That year, BLACKPINK began receiving numerous award nominations, winning Best New Artist at multiple ceremonies, including the Golden Disc Awards and Seoul Music Awards.

BLACKPINK’s highly anticipated EP, “Square Up,” was released on June 15, 2018. It included the hit single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du,” which debuted at number seventeen on the UK Official Trending Chart and number fifty-five on the US Billboard Hot 100, marking a significant milestone for K-pop girl groups. The music video for “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” broke YouTube viewing records, further propelling BLACKPINK’s international profile. “Square Up” reached number one on South Korea’s Gaon Album Chart and was certified Platinum by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA).

In October 2018, BLACKPINK collaborated with British singer Dua Lipa on the track “Kiss and Make Up,” a song that appeared on Dua Lipa’s re-release album. The collaboration expanded BLACKPINK’s global exposure and charted internationally. BLACKPINK’s next major project came in April 2019 with their second EP, “Kill This Love.” The title track debuted at number twenty-four on the Billboard 200, the highest-charting album by a Korean girl group at that time, and earned significant chart positions worldwide. The “Kill This Love” music video set a record for the fastest video to reach 100 million views on YouTube at the time.

BLACKPINK made history in April 2019 by performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, becoming the first female K-pop group to perform at the iconic event. This high-profile appearance significantly elevated their global status. In the same year, they embarked on the “In Your Area World Tour,” playing to sold-out crowds across North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.

The group’s first Korean-language studio album, “The Album,” was released on October 2, 2020. It debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 and topped charts in South Korea, Australia, Canada, and the UK. The album featured prominent collaborations, including “Ice Cream” with Selena Gomez and “Bet You Wanna” with Cardi B. The lead single, “How You Like That,” set multiple Guinness World Records for its YouTube viewership and topped charts worldwide. “The Album” sold over one million copies, becoming one of the best-selling K-pop albums of 2020, and received a nomination for Top Social Artist at the Billboard Music Awards.

BLACKPINK released their second Korean studio album, “Born Pink,” on September 16, 2022. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making BLACKPINK the first female Korean group to achieve this milestone. Singles from “Born Pink” included “Pink Venom,” which topped Billboard’s Global 200 and reached the top positions on charts worldwide. The album also included the single “Shut Down,” another global hit. “Born Pink” earned critical acclaim and further expanded the group’s international presence.

Throughout their career, BLACKPINK has amassed numerous awards, including multiple Mnet Asian Music Awards, Melon Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and Gaon Chart Music Awards. They’ve also received recognition at major Western award shows, winning MTV Video Music Awards and being nominated for People’s Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and Billboard Music Awards.

Outside of music, BLACKPINK members have individually pursued numerous brand endorsements and partnerships, working with global fashion houses like Chanel, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Celine. They have also served as brand ambassadors for prominent international brands such as Adidas, Samsung, and Pepsi. In 2021, BLACKPINK was appointed as advocates for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), highlighting their global influence beyond entertainment.

BLACKPINK has frequently been praised for their dynamic performances, strong visual presentation, and cross-cultural appeal, bridging language and cultural barriers to become influential figures globally. Their presence on social media platforms, particularly Instagram and YouTube, continues to set records, making them one of the most followed and engaged-with music groups in the world.

As of 2025, BLACKPINK remains active, releasing new music, embarking on world tours, and continuing their involvement in diverse fields such as fashion, advocacy, and global brand partnerships.
