Clarksdale, Mississippi, has always been more than a hometown for Christone “Kingfish” Ingram; it has been the training ground for a guitarist who became widely known while he was still a teenager. Ingram, born January 19, 1999, grew up around church music through an extended family that sang and played in that setting, and his early listening drew from cornerstone names in blues and beyond, including Robert Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins, B. B. King, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, and Prince. His mother, Princess Pride, is a first cousin of country musician Charley Pride, a family connection that sits alongside his own path as a modern Mississippi blues figure.

The blues entered his life with a specific spark, a PBS documentary about Muddy Waters that his father showed him when he was around five. That moment also pointed him toward the Delta Blues Museum, where he learned through the museum’s arts and education program with Bill “Howl N Mad” Perry and Richard “Daddy Rich” Crisman. Perry also gave him the nickname “Kingfish,” drawn from a character in The Amos ’n’ Andy Show. His instrument journey started on drums at age six, moved to bass by age eleven, and then landed on guitar, a progression that helped him develop as a band musician rather than only a lead player. By age fifteen, he had already received offers to perform and for custom guitars, and he also appeared on the Rachael Ray and Steve Harvey shows.

Ingram started working publicly in his own community early, playing gigs around Clarksdale while he was still in seventh grade and quickly building a local following. He performed at venues that included Red’s Lounge, Ground Zero Blues Club, the New Roxy, Shack Up Inn, and the Delta Blues Room. In November 2014, he performed at the White House for Michelle Obama with the Delta Blues Museum band, a high-profile moment that came while he was still in his teens. His growing visibility also included festival and club appearances, and by 2015 he had attracted attention from Tony Coleman, B. B. King’s drummer, who praised his blues playing.

His work expanded beyond traditional blues stages in ways that kept him visible to new audiences. In May 2017, a Billboard item noted that Luke Cage creator Cheo Hodari Coker selected him for a cameo role in season two of the series, and in 2018, he appeared in episode four, “I Get Physical,” performing “The Thrill Is Gone” and “I Put a Spell on You.” In June 2018, he performed alongside Rakim for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concerts series, playing “King’s Paradise,” “Paid in Full,” and “Know the Ledge.” He also appeared as a featured artist on Eric Gales’ 2017 album Middle of the Road, and he shared the stage with artists including the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Samantha Fish, Bob Margolin, Mr. Sipp, Rick Derringer, Guitar Shorty, and Buddy Guy.

His recorded career took a major step with his debut album, Kingfish, released May 17, 2019, on Alligator Records. The album was produced by Tom Hambridge at Ocean Way Studio in Nashville and reached number one on the Billboard Blues Chart and topped the Billboard Heatseekers chart upon release. The record earned a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album and also became a major awards magnet, including the Blues Music Awards that year for Best Emerging Artist Album, Contemporary Blues Album, and Album of the Year. In May 2020, he received five Blues Music Awards, including Album of the Year for Kingfish. Two months later, he released “Rock & Roll,” a song composed by Sean McConnell and Ashley Ray that he adapted as a tribute to his mother after her death.

Ingram followed with 662, released July 23, 2021, a title tied directly to his home region, with Ingram describing “662” as the area code representing the whole north Mississippi Delta. At the 64th Annual Grammy Awards on April 3, 2022, he won Best Contemporary Blues Album for 662, and the album also received a Blues Music Award for Contemporary Blues Album. The song “662” also charted on US AAA, peaking at number thirty-nine. In September 2022, Fender released a custom Kingfish Telecaster Deluxe, another industry marker of how closely his identity had become linked to his guitar sound and public profile.

His momentum continued through touring and recognition, including supporting the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park in London as part of the 2022 British Summer Time concerts. In 2023, he was named Contemporary Blues Male Artist of the Year at the Blues Music Awards. He also released Live in London, recorded June 6, 2023 at The Garage and released October 13, 2023, and that album received Blues Music Awards for Contemporary Blues Album and Album of the Year. In October 2024, he launched Red Zero Records in partnership with Exceleration Music, taking the role of label CEO while his longtime manager Ric Whitney became President, and the label’s first project was positioned as his third studio album, set for release in 2025. He is also featured on the soundtrack for Ryan Coogler’s horror film Sinners, with a brief end credits cameo playing alongside Buddy Guy.
